news and gigs on Dublin’s jazz and improvised music scene by Improvised Music Company (IMC). GIGS For our 30th anniversary this year, IMC selected 30 musicians from across Ireland who collectively represent the diversity, creativity and dynamism of the Irish jazz scene now, and into the future, and we’ll be working with them closely for the next year. You can catch 3 of them live at The Complex this October in a miniseries of Monday night jazz concerts! improvisedmsuic.ie IMC’s 30/30: Dana Masters Band, Monday 17th October Searing storytelling, powerful lyrics, rich vocals and the grand tradition of American jazz and soul songs from powerful vocalist Dana Masters, with Cian Boylan on piano, Dave Redmond on bass and Dareen Beckett on drums. Cormac McCarthy, Monday 24th October Experience the immersive expanse of solo piano as one of Ireland’s most lyrical and imaginative pianists as Cormac McCarthy plays from his upcoming album On The Other Hand. Aengus Hackett & Mike Nielsen, Monday 31st October For a hygge Halloween, far from the hustle and bustle, join virtuoso guitar duo Aengus Hackett & Mike Nielsen as they bring to life the most wellloved music of Cole Porter. REGULARS The long running Dublin Jazz Jam are in The International Bar, Wicklow St, Dublin 2 roughly every 2 weeks, next in residence on Sunday 2nd and Sunday 16th October from 3:30pm. They also have a fairly regular Thursday evening session at The Bohemian Bar, Phibsborough Rd, next happening on the 22nd September. Tengu Jazz is a new jazz sit down series at sushi bar Yamamouri Tengu (just off Liffey St at 37 Strand Street Great, Dublin 1) taking place fortnightly(ish), kicking off with drummer Dan Walsh’s experimental quintet Fixity on Wednesday 28th September, followed by smoother grooves from trio Five to Two on Thursday 13th October with Matthew Breen (piano), Jonah Byrne (double bass), Finn Mac Anna (drums) Over in Arthur’s Blues & Jazz Club (Thomas St, Dublin 8) top level sextet The Dirty Jazz Club do their monthly ‘thang on Sat 24th Sept from 8:30pm. Also coming up is The Lee Meehan Quintet on Friday September 30th, The Sam McGuire Quartet on Thursday, October 6th, The Mario Bakuna Band ‘Brazilian Landscapes’ Tour on Saturday, October 8th, and The RBG Trio on Wednesday October 12th. JAZZ & IMPROVISED MUSIC Dublin Jazz Co-op have weekly Sunday evening gigs in the Vintage Room at The Workman’s Club. NEWS Special Mention for a lunchtime concert on Friday 14th October at the John Field Room in the National Concert Hall; Stella Bass & The Johnny Taylor Trio: “Phil Ware – By Prior Arrangement”. As celebrated jazz pianist Phil Ware recovers from illness, Stella Bass, long-time friend and collaborator performs some arrangements Phil wrote for her. Expect Kern, Porter, Gershwin and a few surprises!
