MAR-APR 24 THE LOVE BUZZ - WORKMAN’S CELLAR - APR
IL 21ST The press release says “Known for their high energy sets and hypnotic melodies, The Love Buzz describe themselves as the scuzzy power pop princes of Ireland. They are the tongue in cheek beacon of hope blending their hyper-caustic pogo punk with timeless pop bangers”. Nailed it. Another fine Cork export. STUPID SON / PUNCHES PILOT / BURGLAR - WORKMAN’S CELLAR - APRIL 24TH Great three band bash in the stellar Workmans Cellar Venue with Stupid Son showcasing their ultra cool new EP Comedy (see review in this issue). Burglar provide a mellow combination of bedroom pop and shoegaze while the fey alt Americana of Punches Pilot were our editors standout band at Whelan’s Ones To Watch. Night’s like these are the bedrock of our scene and are always worth a punt. HAVANA ROOTS - BELLO BAR - APRIL 26TH Expect this venue to be hopping with the exotic sounds of the always brilliant Havana Roots band, a nine piece who expertly blend traditional Son Cubano with the irresistible rhythms of Jamaican roots music. If you fancy letting loose and having a good old fashioned dance this is the gig for you. SCUSTIN - WORKMAN’S CLUB - APRIL 27TH Scustin’s sound was seemingly created by imagining what would happen if Blindboy, Mike Skinner, Jamiroquai and Viagra Boys went for a boozy night out in Bray and wrote an album about it. Well, I’d buy that album! The music is brilliant, full of top notch funk chops and the humour is pure Dublinese (or should that be Wicklowese?), full of wry observations about the underbelly of our wonderful city. Great stuff. NIAMH BURY - WHELAN’S - APRIL 28TH Rising folk artist Niamh Bury launches her superb debut album Yellow Roses tonight and it’s a safe bet that this will be stuffed with folk aficionados and a host of peers checking out what the buzz around Niamh is all about. The first thing that hits you is the voice, then the quality of the songwriting. Bury never takes the boring road while traversing her songs. It’s an irresistible package. CASS MCCOMBS & STEVE GUNN - THE GRAND SO CIAL - APRIL 28TH & 29TH Fascinating double bill featuring two American singer/songwriters who have released some great records (check out McCombs ‘Absentee’, a modern classic) over the last few years to widespread acclaim. Gunne was a guitarist in Kurt Vile’s Violators while McCombs (who played a memorable gig in the same venue back in 2011) embarks on his first ever solo tour. The added second date proves the high regard these artists are held. (L-R) SEXYTADHG, E THE ARTIST, JULIA LOUISE KNIFEFEST KELLY MORAN - THE PAVIL ION - APRIL 28TH & 29TH Following a show-stopping performance at Haunted Dancehall in 2023, Kelly Moran returns to Dublin to celebrate the release of her outstanding new album Moves in the Field on Warp Records. The album showcases a unique collaboration with the Yamaha Disklavier, pushing the boundaries of human and machine interaction. Moran, a signed Yamaha artist, skillfully combines her pianistic abilities with the Disklavier’s inhuman capabilities, resulting in multi-layered, orchestrated compositions, thus solidifying Moran’s status as a trailblazing figure in modern music. JULIA LOUISE KNIFEFEST + E THE ARTIST - WHELAN’S UPSTAIRS - MAY 1ST Two of Ireland’s most progressive young electronic acts come together for what’s gonna be an absolute banger of a gig. Knifefest is as raw and exciting as it gets, thrashing breakcore allied to incessant plummelling rhythms while E The Artist is a sound and visual artist who has grown up between Coolock and Lagos while chiselling out an eloquent narrative across both artforms. This is the sound of Dublin 2024. SPRINTS - BUTTON FACTORY - MAY 3RD & 4TH Both shows are long sold out but when they announce their next Dublin date, don’t pause, just buy those tickets. SIMPLE KID - THE GRAND SOCIAL - MAY 4TH It was hard to breathe, never mind dance at Simple Kids last gig in Whelans so lord knows what this will be like. It was however one of the most pleasing returns to the stage by anyone in years, a fabulous gig. His latest opus Health & Safety is full of the melodic frills and rhythmic shimmys that made him such a vital act back in 2003 and when he launches into that back catalogue, well, it’s hard not to get emotional. CONCHUR WHITE - WORK MAN’S CLUB - MAY 4TH Really looking forward to this one. White’s recently released debut album Swirling Violets is already one of our contenders for album of the year so it’s gonna be fascinating to experience its lush arrangements in a live setting. Dream pop par excellence, White’s material is melodically strong and structurally sound so if it’s just him and a guitar it’ll still be an invigorating show. PAGE 5
