Sammallahti Theatre: Peer Gynt Peer Gynt is the enormous trickster and tragic figure of Norwegian drama, pulled from a fairy tale by Henrik Ibsen and transformed into a larger-than-life rogue who struggles with himself and the weight of life as he journeys through a shape-shifting dreamworld. There’s enough depth and drama in this verse play that a director can steer it onto multiple paths, so now we can see Michael Thalheimer’s take on it again when this production returns to Dramaten after its debut in 2018. It’s the first version of the play at the theatre since Ingmar Bergman’s back in 1991. Peer Gynt, Dramaten, opens Jan 9 Exhibition: Pentti Sammallahti This exhibition posits that Western materialism suffers from a lack of space for mystique, the things in life that seem to exist outside of the hard concrete of that we understand. So as a remedy it provides the work of Finnish photographer, poet and artist Pentti Sammallahti. Sammallahti has a talent for capturing the nature’s seemingly supernatural power and force, his photographs taking us inside the worlds of wild spaces. “These kinds of powerful artworks remind us of the mystery of existence”, says the exhibition’s producer Emilie Ackerman. Exhibition: Inspiration The classic and the contemporary meet in this new exhibition at Nationalmuseum. The concept is pretty simple – classical works of art from the past obviously filter through and inspire modern artists. So why not collect contemporary works from all disciplines and parts of the world and see exactly how those classical pieces have been digested by and inspired today’s artists? The exhibition also includes the classics from Nationalmuseum’s collection to see how they interact with the contemporary works. Inspiration – Iconic Works, Nationalmuseum, opens Feb 20 Gig: Amason Amason have been busy recently. 2019 has seen the dream-pop troupe drop the first part of their Galaxy double-album, with the second half due to touch terra firma in early 2020. Galaxy I sticks to what they do best – slow, starry spellbinding songs - so we can expect more from the second chapter. And you can see them play it, and selections from their formidable collection of hits, when they fill Cirkus across two dates in February. Amason, Cirkus, Feb 25, 26 28 Photo: Sören Vilks
