Good literature is every child’s right Access by
young people to literature – be it entertaining, exciting, innovative or provocative – is essential to a democratic, open society. Children’s literature has the ability to increase understanding and exchanges between cultures and individuals. Astrid Lindgren was an ardent advocate for peace and democracy and strongly opposed to all forms of violence. She contributed to public debate through speeches and newspaper articles. Her deeply humanistic spirit permeates her works. Every year, the jury selects one or more laureates whose works or activities are of the highest quality, regardless of language or nationality. Laureates must actively safe guard democratic values in the spirit of Astrid Lindgren.
