Stockholms Feministiska Filmfestival opens with the Oscar-nominated Lebanese film Capernaum, directed by Nadine Labaki, on February 28 at Skandiabiografen, followed by the announcement of the recipient of the year’s Annapriset filmmakers’ grant. The rest of the line-up has yet to be announced, but you can be sure it’ll be full of fascinating films, workshops, talks and more. This year’s edition opens up in January, with 254 works on display from 136 participants, chosen from 3,538 applications. Vårsalongen is notable for the range and variety of the works displayed – this year’s selection features 79 women and 57 men, artists ranging in age from 18 to over 90 and includes paintings, sculptures, textiles and more. Still from l'Echange des Princesses, High Sea Production et Scope Pictures, 2017 Indie Awards Manifest is a platform run by SOM, Svenska Oberoende Musikproducenter, with the aim of promoting, providing support for and growing Sweden’s independent music scene. As part of their work, they’ve been putting on the Manifestgalan awards since 2003, an awards gala that highlights the best the Swedish independent scene has to offer. This year’s gala will be at Nalen on February 15, where awards will be handed out in 21 categories by a jury that has considered 405 albums and 159 music videos in their deliberating process. And this year’s ceremony will be led by the actress, writer and filmmaker Saga Becker, star of 2014’s Nånting måste gå sönder and writer and director of the short film Fuckgirls. Becker says: “I am unbelievably happy to have been given such an honourable task! I love the challenge and this is a great way to set the bar for 2019! I’m really looking forward to it”. As well as the awards, the ceremony will also feature performances from some of Sweden’s biggest indie artists. There will also be a wide range of related events in the week leading up to the gala (including a free show at Nalen on Feb 14). The nominees include Jenny Wilson, Les Big Byrd and Sibille Attar. Manifestgalan 2019, Feb 15, Nalen French treats And another one from the film world. Stockholm’s French film festival, Franska Filmfestivalen will be returning to the city’s screens in February, with the official dates pencilled in for between Feb 11-17. The festival, which is run by Franska Institutet, has been going since 2004, and is regarded as a platform to introduce French and French-speaking film to Swedish audiences.
