exhibition Dorothy Cross - I dreamt I dwelt Cross
is one of our foremost artists always exploring the complex relationship between the natural world and humankind with rigorous intent and masterful execution. Three new stone sculptures are part of this show which takes its title lead from the popular aria of from Michael William Balfe’s 1843 opera The Bohemian Girl. A shark rises from a floor of Carrara marble tiles as if emerging from the surface of the ocean, two ears listen out from pillows carved from the same marble whilst another work stacks pieces of granite, quartz, sandstone and marble into a mound. He’s bringing the virtuoso, Irish traditional concertina player Cormac Begley, who wowed us with his Sunday morning performance at Another Love Story last month, together with the European classical, contemporary collective, s t a r g a z e and twelve international dancers from the Teaċ Daṁsa company. Little is known about the production except that it “acknowledges how life’s polarities can on occasion come together and find resolution.” It forms part of this year’s Dublin Theatre Festival which launches on Thursday September 26. O’Reilly Theatre, Wednesday September 25 to Saturday October 5, €30-€40 club Pantha Du Prince - Conference of Trees comedy Ben Elton Now here’s a blast from the past. There was a time when Elton was royalty in comic circles having earned his chops as a writer on cult classic shows such as The Young Ones and Blackadder. Much loved by the Guardian set, we can only assume writing the smash hit musical We Will Rock You along with Queen has afforded him a champagne socialist lifestyle long since detached from his ‘right-on’, left-wing leanings. He’s written 16 novels and remains prolific in film writing and directing. However, a 15 year break from the stand-up scene may dim the spotlight on this. Olympia, Friday September 27, €35-€38 In his latest project, musician Hendrik Weber aka Pantha Du Prince explores communication between trees. Scientists have increasingly been confirming something that countless stories across cultures have described for millennia: trees can exchange information amongst themselves, even across long distances. Weber turns this cellular ‘conversation’ into an artistic work that allows a sensual entry into this secretive phenomenon and combines music, visual poetry and speculative science. An NCH regular, he last performed there with Norwegian percussion group The Bell Laboratory. National Concert Hall, Sunday September 29, €27.50-€37.50 86
