Cold delight Dictated by the harsh weather and a lack of light, you could make the point that Stockholmers’ intake of ice cream is limited to a few sunshiny months. With that in mind, it probably comes as a great surprise to hear that Swedes, despite the above stated fact, actually consume the second-most ice cream per capita on this planet. There used to be a glaring quality issue too. Mostly exposed to a very sweet, and flavour-wise limited, industrial production, Swedes apparently didn’t care a whole lot about real taste as they celebrated their brief seasonal freedom in the sun. But today, things are beginning to look a tad different. Gelato, the Italian type of ice cream that used to be a rarity on these shores, has made a stunning entrance on the scene to rapturous applause. And with significantly lower levels of fat, and significantly higher levels of premier ingredients, what’s not to like? Over the course of the last few years, a whole string of great ice cream parlours have added culinary quality to the already incredible Stockholm summers. For this issue, we met the most celebrated gelato maker around, and listed a few of the other good places to get a scoopBut you know how it is, before you’re allowed to get to the sweet stuff, you need to finish your dinner. That shouldn’t be much of a problem since Stockholm both offers a high gastronomic level and enjoys great summer dining locations. It’s more a case of a tricky decision-process as the steady influx of new quality eateries ensures an everlengthening list of attractive options. Luckily we can lean on a helpful panel of savvy local food and drink-personalities that can provide us, and you, with their personal recommendations. Enjoy your time in the sunshine.
