We’re raising a glass to the prospect of a slender new tome dedicated to one of our favourite topics. A Compendium of Irish Pints sees epicurean Ali Dunworth delve into the boozy underbelly of how these simple jars of joy became such a popular phenomenon. Slainte! ninebeanrowsbooks.com When a dining establishment opens in London as late as November and is quickly anointed restaurant of the year, you know it’s got to be good. The Devonshire in Soho recently did just that, under the expert stewardship of Dubliner Oisín Rogers, who once upon a time pulled pints in The Stag’s Head on Dame Lane. The years since have seen him forge a career as the most famous pub landlord in London, and his new venture with co-owners Charlie Carroll and Ashley Palmer Watts has seen the Devonshire’s downstairs bar rapidly gaining a reputation for that most elusive of London beasts, a great pint of Guinness. The first floor is home to The Grill Room, a gorgeous wood-ember grill restaurant, where the menu boasts a fine selection of sea food including creel-caught langoustines from Oban, fresh day boat fish, with lobster and handdived scallops from Devon. The Sunday lunch has Scottish beef, dry-aged and butchered on site, as its centre piece, while the popular new spot also does a hearty Beef Cheek and Guinness Suet Pudding that’s sure to appeal to ex-pats everywhere. Located down the road from our old fav The Coach and Horses, The Devonshire is already being feted as the best pub in London. Put it on your list if your plans include a trip to Blighty this spring. @devonshiresoho This spring sees Hawksmoor dishing up a lush interpretation of the Dublin pub classic enjoyed by co-founders Huw Gott and Will Beckett in the city last year. As the steak specialists whiled away the hours getting their new city centre restaurant up and running, some new-found Irish pals helped them enjoy some downtime by introducing them to the magical world of pints, toasties, and those all-important bags of Tayto. A taste of this special time has now been memorialised by Hawksmoor’s Executive Head Chef Matt Brown who has devised his own variation on the Irish pub staple. Enter the Ultimate Ham and Cheese Toastie, which comes packed with gorgeous Ham hock, red and white Irish cheddar, Gubbeen and mozzarella, cornichon pickles and jalapeños. Brown serves this combo with a side of Tayto, turbo-charged with toppings of scallion mayo and juicy ham hock. The limited edition collab is available in the bar area until the end of March.
