New Swedish Books, Autumn 2018 1
7 Autumn 2018 The Yearn The year is 1999. Despite
the approaching new millennium, 30-year-old Urban Jordberg is stuck in the past. He has buried his father, abandoned his mother and moved from the countryside to the big city, but the guilt of his departure weighs heavily upon him. Experiences that could become his salvation – his acquaintance with Sonja, his love of birds – soon descend into twisted obsessions. Tomas Bannerhed’s anticipated second novel has many similarities to his acclaimed debut The Ravens (2011). This book is also about relating to one’s roots, a mentally ill parent and inherited susceptibility. Here too, Bannerhed excels in creating a sense of foreboding, where glimpses of beauty and intimacy only serve to intensify the surrounding darkness.
