JULY '24 Sweet June - ‘Poisoned Thoughts’ Sweet J
une’s debut single is a slowmoving ballad about memory. Produced by Daniel de Burca (Paddy Keyes, SexyTadgh, Clay Pigeon Shooting), ‘Poisoned Thoughts’ is almost a dreamscape of music, transporting you to another world. The Dublin-based artist uses a slow and upbeat melody with piano and a bedroom pop melody, giving that sense of wonder, and along with Sweet June’s tranquil vocals, it lets ‘Poisoned Thoughts’ be surrounded by a world of melancholy and emotion. AG Jennifer McMahon - ‘In Another World’ Following the release of ‘Letting Go of You’ in May, Jennifer McMahon’s new song ‘In Another World’ is an OldSchool soul classic with influences and features of Gospel music. With vocals and instrumentation similar to Jeff Buckley’s ‘Lover, You Should Come Over’, McMahon’s vibrant tone brings emotion to the song. ‘In Another World’ tells the story of heartbreak. Recorded in Dublin and Nashville, Tennessee, McMahon’s heartbreaking ballad is the strong opener ahead of her EP ‘Letting Go of You’ to be released in August. AG Kabin Crew (Feat. Lisdoonvarna Crew) - ‘The Spark’ After going viral online, Kabin Krew released their muchawaited single ‘The Spark’ on June 13. You have to give it to them – the young groups’ energy and rap style are infectious, and the club beat in the background leaves you wanting more from these two groups. I think their sound can be summed up by a line from this single: “listen to this in the car, you’ll be getting road rage.” They rap with the type of experience and familiarity that other rappers often work their whole lives for. The world will definitely be paying attention to Kabin and Lisdoonvarna Crew. EW The X Collective - ‘BIG’ The X Collective are Celaviedmai, Jamel Franklin, and Shanny. I immediately got flashbacks to Biggie with this single. Jamel Franklin’s voice is addictive. It feels like the type of song you play when you’re about to do something badass. I love the vintage and lyrical-heavy style of rap that is now making a comeback. They show their musician flexibility by throwing in some funk beats and soul lyricism to the mix from Celaviedmai and Shanny. Overall, this song may be a new summer favourite. EW Elaine Mai and MuRli brought their different but similar sounds to this song, and it paid off in this single released on June 14. Mai brought her signature smooth house base and added in piano and synths to give this song a softer tone. MuRli ventured outside of his usual rap sound into a more sensitive pop sound before returning to his classic contemplative flow. The song reminds me of sitting underneath the trees on a cool summer night. EW Marie-Thérèse - ‘Strange Relationship’ In honour of the legendary artist, Prince, MarieThérèse has released her version of his hit song ‘Strange Relationship’ to celebrate his birthday. While staying true to Prince's distinctive style, Marie-Thérèse has added her twist to the song, giving it a grittier vibe. Her vibrant vocals and electric instrumentation offer a fresh perspective to the song while keeping the spirit of Prince's music alive. An interesting take. AG Dublin pop princess Pastiche latest has influences of ‘80s production skilfully mixed with club and techo-pop sounds. It has a catchy hook and pop chorus that, once in, never leaves your head. The single is perfect to put on before a night out and is very dancefloor friendly. This is the kind of music that makes you want to be in a dark club with neon strobe lighting, feeling dizzy with your friends and strangers alike. SP Alice Jago - ‘High Time’ The latest single from Alice Jago is fresh and sweet. ‘High Time’ combines an interesting mix of classical and blues music - with heavy hints of Ella Fitzgerald - while retaining a distinctive tone courtesy of Jago’s sweet and easygoing voice. The string arrangement is stunning and connects beautifully with the tasteful drums, bass, guitar backing. It’s been a while since Jago released her acclaimed Born Stubborn album so this is a very welcome return. AG ..
