One venue, two days, three stages, fifty live acts and one vision. Titled Hard Working Class Heroes, its vision was to create a support network around Irish music, to aid and abet musicians navigating the murky waters of an industry that was patrolled by sharks and to give a voice to those who felt undervalued, exploited and discriminated against. The first year was a success and also a huge learning curve, and, by the following year head honchos Angela Dorgan and Brian Carroll had more or less nailed the template for future gatherings with an action packed lineup of bands and artists rounding off days spent discussing the orientations and minutiae of the business side of things, aspects that, over its twenty years or so in existence, have been dissected, explored and addressed expertly by the First Music Contact team and their guest contributors for the benefit of said artists and everyone working on the good ship Irish Music. Now called Ireland Music Week, the event rolls into the city centre Oct 3rd - 6th and yet again is an unmissable feast of music, workshops, collabs and information. Myself and Ethan Golding had the impossible task of highlighting ten acts (from fifty) to look out for but our advice is to do a bit of prep by checking out the full line up on their site, listen to their tracks and plan your schedule, just like you would at ATN or the Picnic. It’s one of our favourite events in the gig calendar and fully deserves your support. irelandmusicweek.ie for all ticket info, line ups and conference details. We chatted to two great Irish acts who have recently released superb records, Autre Monde and Brigid Mae Power and a young woman who is the first female Irish artist to top the Irish singles charts in 14 years, Jazzy. Power’s new album Dream From The Deep Well is gorgeous; a wonderful, tender collection of songs that hark back to classic songwriter and recording methods a la Karen Dalton, PJ Harvey, Judee Sill and Lara Veirs. Released in late June, she launches it with an intimate show in Whelans on Oct 5th. The Monde share an intertwining history in some Popical Island Collective related bands (including Land Lovers, Skelocrats, Ginnels, No Monster Club and Grand Pocket Orchestra) and feature the one and only Paddy Hanna in its ranks. It’s a fab four throughout though, as inherent on their brilliantly off kilter album Sensitive Assignments released last week. Check them out live in the Bello Bar on Oct 27th. Crumlin native Jazzy is also a renowned DJ and, with four UK hit singles under her belt, is fast becoming one of the most exciting new voices in the dance world. Onwards and Upwards! Finally, as the music world still reels from the death of Sinead O’Connor we are grateful to Firehouse Skanker Brendan White for his wonderfully informative and reverential piece on Sinead’s love of reggae and the staggering body of work she outputted in that genre. Jah No Dead Sinead. Front Cover: Many thanks to Olive Hatake (back left), Cruel Sister (back right), Qbanaa (bottom right) and Ashley from hotgirl (bottom left) for giving us their time and all round lovely vibes for the cover shoot. Thanks also to Annette & Phil Udell from The Word Up Collective and Liza Geddes for photoshoot coordination and Keiron Black for use of The Grand Social beer garden as the location.
