We want to reflect the zeitgeist of today and what the life science industry’s measures are in the ongoing global course of events, including climate threat, a loss of faith in science, a postpandemic era involving insights from how we handled COVID-19, and not least, the war in Ukraine. A whole year has gone by since Russia invaded Ukraine and we would like to highlight the important work being done by scientists to promote peace during these times. This role is not a new role for the scientific community. Many scientists, not least Nobel Laureates, have been advocates for peace throughout the years. Famous and significant manifests and documents have been written by Albert Einstein, Bertrand Russell and Linus Pauling, underlining the danger of nuclear weapons – to mention just a few examples. Scientists need to step in where politics fails in diplomacy, states the Science4Peace Forum in their interview on page 76. We need a scientific community that does not accept restrictions of its academic freedom. If cross-border exchange and good communications are lost, innovation, and even more important, our ability to solve urgent global health issues, is jeopardized. Our profile in this issue, Nobel Laureate Carolyn Bertozzi (page 20) also emphasizes the many important roles scientists have in improving the human condition and in turn global stability. “Our technologies can lift people out of poverty, increase scare resources and access to them, mitigate disease and climate change. All of this can contribute to peace if we execute well,” she says. Another peace activist and Nobel Laureate, Peter Agre, described it well: “Science is a wide-ranging effort that naturally crosses borders, and so scientist-to-scientist collaboration can promote goodwill at the grass roots.” MALIN OTMANI EDITOR IN CHIEF FOR DAILY UPDATES ON THE NORDIC LIFE SCIENCE INDUSTRY, VISIT: NORDICLIFESCIENCE.ORG.
