BARFLY Michael McDermott 1. LOW TIDE 2. ALL GOOD
Farewell then to the Flowing Tide, a landmark boozer who could certainly be included in the ‘if these walls could talk’ category. Across from the Abbey, it has encountered all the luvvies and the not so luvvies in its day. It even took a hit back in 1916 when an artillery shell intended for the GPO struck it. It went on the market for €2m before the pandemic and casually stated on Twitter in June that, “We’re getting a bit of a facelift, but it’s what’s inside that counts.” Whether it has taken its final bow as the Tide or returns for a second act remains to be seen. The latest wine bar with selfdeclared ‘notions’ has entered the fray on Aungier Street. All Good sees the daytime base of Network coffee slip out some stemware after 6 until you tumbler out from Thursday through Saturday. With an emphasis on natural wines and small plates for the moment, it’s, erm, all good. @allgoodwinebar 39 Aungier Street, Dublin 2 3. STOREY? Three Storey is bedding in on St. Stephen’s Green after opening in the spring with a promise to be a “modern Irish dining, a café, spritzeria and cocktail bar under one roof serving coffee, cocktails, wines and aperitivi in a contemporary sophisticated setting”. The cocktail side of things is helmed by Slovak Martin Holec, formerly of The Sitting Room at Delahunt, and he’s been busy bringing new tastes to the town such as the Pardona, his mash-up of a Margarita and Paloma in which he’s redistilled tequila with chargrilled pardon peppers and combine it with grapefruit juice. And far be it for us not to play our part in ‘Barcry’ and give you a stat to moan about down your local. Of 36 countries surveyed recently, Ireland came second for the highest alcohol prices, 101% above the EU27 average. We were only eclipsed by Iceland (186%). The country groups included in the analysis in 2021 were the 27 Member States of the European Union, the three European Free Trade Association countries (Iceland, Norway and Switzerland), the five candidate countries (Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey) and potential candidate countries (Bosnia and Herzegovina). Within the European Union Finland was the most expensive for alcohol and Hungary was the least expensive. 5.
