DLR MUSICIANS-IN-RESIDENCE SCHEME Music Network and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council have announced a call for applications for the DLR Musicians-in-Residence Scheme 2025. The scheme, which is now in its eleventh year, provides musicians with space and time to develop new work, collaborate with other artists and present their music through open rehearsals, workshops and public performances in Dún Laoghaire. This year’s residencies will run from May to November 2025. Two residencies are available to musicians working in any genre: one is aimed at established musicians, and offers a maximum award of €12,000; the other is for emerging musicians, with a maximum award of €7,500. Applicants can be individual musicians or groups, and must be connected to Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown either by living in or being from the area, or by proposing a project with links with the area, for example, by taking inspiration from the location or by engaging with local communities or musicians. The deadline for applications is Friday 21 February at 2pm. Last year’s recipients of the award were percussionist Brian Fleming, violinist Jane Hackett and keyboardist Luke Dunford. musicnetwork.ie THE DUNDALK BARD ON CELLULOID Four years after the breakthrough success of his debut album Beginner’s Guide to Bravery, Dundalk songwriter, musician, and composer, David Keenan, is the subject of a film - titled Focla ar Chanbhás (Words on Canvas) that documents his inner and outer worlds, all told as Gaeilge. “Anger is easy to portray, it’s the hurt that’s hard”, he says, as we explore David’s wordsmithing over the course of 500 days. This is a portrait of one artist as a young man, which in turn is a portrait of every musical artist as they endeavour to stand out in a world of “algorithm and blues”, and remain authentically and powerfully true to themselves. The film will premiere in North America at the Chicago Irish Film Festival on the 28th of February before moving to the Capital film festival in DC and then closing New York’s Craicfest on March 8th. It is set for Irish, European and UK screenings later in 2025. The film is directed by Paddy Hayes of Tua films and was made in association with the Arts Council of Ireland & TG4. 8 TEXACO CHILDRENS ART Wow, hard to believe it’s been 71 years since the Texaco Children’s Art Competition came into being. Yes, I did enter, I was admittedly crap at Art and although some of my fellow schoolmates were brilliant, they never got a sniff of the prize. A look at their website shows just how high the standard is and applications for this year’s prize are now open. Closing date for entry is Friday, 28th February 2025 , go to texacochildrensart.com to apply.
