gig Beauty Sleep The first chords of Beauty Sleep
’s new album Be Kind sounds like the dream-pop of Phoenix. And the rest of the album doesn’t disappoint. The Belfast trio have delivered all the fuzz and finesse needed to languish on a swimming pool lilo with a cocktail in hand. Across ten tracks all coming in around the three-minute mark, Beauty Sleep bring the feelgood factor in spades, and a great release in tow. Whelans Upstairs, Thursday June 8, €13 talk An Evening with Bob Woodward The legendary American investigative journalist is best known for teaming up with Carl Bernstein and exposing the Watergate scandal which led to the resignation of President Nixon. A prolific writer on US current affairs, his most recent book Fear: Trump in the White House, proved to be a penetrating portrait of a sitting United States president in the first year of an administration. Tonight, in the company of our most distinguished commentator Fintan O’Toole, Woodward will discuss the state of the US presidency. While this will largely entail preaching to the choir, Woodward will hopefully have some insights into whether the 23 Democratic candidates who have declared for the 2020 presidency can actually produce one capable of dethroning Trump. Olympia Theatre, Monday June 10, €65 Album Launch Jonny Dillon – Songs For A One-String Guitar We last encountered Jonny ripping it up at the D1 Paddy’s night celebration in Tengu under his electronic ‘Automatic Tasty’ moniker. Now for a more plaintive side of this archivist at the Irish National Folklore Collection. Songs For A One-String Guitar is recorded as a series of sketches over the last ten years. While informed in large measure by the world of Irish traditional music and song (of Sweeney’s Men, Planxty and Seán Garvey) along with that of primitivism and the American Spiritual (of John Fahey, Hank Williams and Mississippi John Hurt) these songs are equally a personal attempt to give expression to an inner landscape, from the experience of sorrow and loss, to the promise of redemption and renewal. Bello Bar, Thursday June 13, €10 THEATRE Brendan Galileo for Europe We caught this ‘Show in a Bag’ during the Fringe last year and creased ourselves with laughter for the duration of it. We said it was “suffused with wit, warmth, hilarity and a truly exceptional performance by Fionn Foley” and predicted great things for it. It went on to win Best Actor and Little Gem at the Fringe awards and makes a welcome return before entering the fray of the Edinburgh Fringe. Brendan Galileo for Europe explores an island’s relationship with a continent, a community and a contest. As a last-ditch effort to save a local music school, Brendan Galileo is bound for the European Parliament via the Song Contest. We cannot think of no better way to spend your lunch-hour.
