Nöjesnytt Växjö LOST IN TRANSLATION Translation L
LOST IN Carly Hale kommer från Jupiter, Florida, men är numera kärleksinvandrare och bor sedan i juni i Växjö. Varje månad skriver hon i Nöjesnytt, där hon på ett personligt och insiktsfullt sätt delar med sig av sina upplevelser av det nya hemlandet, om språkförbistring och kulturkrockar. Bland mycket annat. et’s get right to the point. I want to talk about sex! No. Not that sex! The number sex. Sorry to disappoint you. But maybe I caught your attention. What I really want to talk about is language. This column is all about being ‘lost in translation,’ after all! I started Svenska för invandrare last September, and have since moved on to Svenska som andra språk this past April. I devoted my university education to English literature and language and am a self-proclaimed word-nerd. My words have been my greatest weapon—and tool—over the years. And now, I find myself starting from the ground up. Learning svenska has been confusing, challenging, overwhelming, and at times, quite comical. So, dear readers, I would like to present you with some of the ‘best of the worst’ of my svenska foibles over the past nine months. You’re welcome… It is no secret that svenska has a great deal of låneord from English. Naturally I utilize those with relative ease. I can relate to them. There isn't much translation going on. But from time to time I throw an English word out hoping it will translate properly. Emphasis on hope. One day our four-year-old daughter was trying to force her shoes onto my feet. So I said, “Nej, de skorna fitta inte!” If the Svenska word for “sit” is “sitta”, then why shouldn't “fit” be “fitta”? Because svenska. Well, lesson learned. With two Swedish kids in the house, of course we have had Swedish songs playing! Around the holidays it was that little number, “Hejsan hoppsan falle-ralle-ra”. Over and over again. One day we were out shopping and I dropped something. Without thinking, I exclaimed “hejsan!” instead of “hoppsan”. I blame the kids. Another time when bidding my brother-in-law farewell I said, “Vi ses igår!” I meant “imorgon.” And then there was the time when I said “god natt” to the owner of the Thai restaurant, thinking that I was saying something along the lines of “have a pleasant evening”. Ah, the face-palm moments seem endless! I’ve had the ‘pleasure’ of reading Swedish translations of English TV programs and films, and I must say I am often unimpressed with the generalized way in which they translate our rich body of slang, colloquialisms, idioms—those nuances in writing that enhance the quality of the viewer/reader experience. Part of my discontent with the translation can be attributed to my academic background. That said, there are times when I have attempted to translate certain English expressions into Swedish and ended up missing the mark. One day, we were at a big family event. That exact day I had an extremely high fever, chills, on the verge of fainting. I felt so bad leaving early, so I went up to the hosts and apologized, “Förlåt mig. Jag måste åka tidigt. Jag är under vädret.” They looked at me with such confusion. Blank stares. Apparently the English expression of feeling sick—under the weather— does not have a Swedish counterpart. Who knows, maybe it will catch on in Sweden! Part of my language-learning process is listening or speaking, and translating—all the time. Everything. The other night, my King and I were chatting over a glass (or sex) of wine, having one of our random discussions, and I posed the very important existential question highly discussed by linguists and philosophers alike, “How do you translate ‘doggy style’ into svenska? Hundmod?” That doesn't sound as sexy in Swedish, does it? I spend so much time thinking about English-Svenska translations, listening to people with different dialects speak the same language, reading how these translators butcher English content, just trying to understand this whole new word-realm. Even though a high percentage of human communication is non-verbal, understanding svenska is essential to functioning in Swedish society. I’ve described for you some of my own linguistic bloopers. Learning should be fun. And embarrassing. We learn best from our mistakes—if we wish to learn at all. And I know that my svenska fluency will come with time and practice. But hey, there’s no cow on the roof. ■ TEXT: CARLY HALE STUDENTLIV LINNÉSTUDENTERNA - STUDENTKÅREN VID LINNÉUNIVERSITETET DANIEL JOBBAR FÖR DIG Våra medlemmar valde Daniel Svedbjörk till Linnéstudenternas ordförande 2014-15.
