Totally Stockholm 1

“It was obviously a joke, but in the tabloids they wrote ”It was outrageous, people ran around with bare butts, and they served crack”. It was everyone from Hells Angels, bank robbers, prostitutes, politicians like Mona Sahlin and the gang, there was Alice Timander, kindergarten teachers, and club and fetish people. It was as fun as you could imagine.” XLNT Marc (Linnér) Claudia Fried, Eva Sundell, Hairspray XLNT Marc What are your strongest personal memories from this early ’90s clubbing scene in Stockholm? To me this whole new club scene was like a revelation – the music, the fashion, the fun parties, the new crowd of people, the creativity, the do-it-yourself attitude… I had just graduated from Beckmans School of Design and wanted my career as a photographer and graphic designer to take off. Surprisingly the best way of doing it was to be out clubbing. When did you last visit a club and what’s your relationship with Stockholm’s nightlife today? At 55, I’m not clubbing the way I used to obviously, but it still happens and mostly when my wife is DJing. With a newborn baby, my nights out usually end quite early. Two memorable clubs I have visited recently: Bronx Sauna and Departure Boat Club. If you feel qualified to answer, are there any similarities in the nightlife today compared to this era, and what would you say are the biggest differences? Wai Chan, Leila K, Katja A.J. Similarities… the best club music today resembles what we did in the ‘90s quite a lot, at least when it comes to house and techno. In those days it was all vinyl of course. Practically all DJs were male then, now the scene is crowded with amazing female DJs, which is really cool. The biggest differences are the club fashion and the party attitude, I think. The ‘90s were all about more is more, you wanted to be seen! It was very creative, people would sew or build new creations every week. Because there wasn’t much of interest in the stores back then, and no internet. Strong colours, a lot of vintage ‘70s, glitter, rubber, strange materials… 13
