Gig Big Thief Big Thief (Adrianne Lenker, Buck Me
ek, Max Oleartchik and James Krivchenia) have always been favourites of the critics, but in 2019 they really outdid themselves. After a (for them) long break since 2017’s Capacity, they made up for lost time with not one, but two albums in 2019, and both U.F.O.F and Two Hands landed in the top 20 on Pitchfork’s albums of the year list. They bring their twisting, winding rock music to Sweden in March. His work depicts the darkness of reality, but draws scenarios and dreams that shapeshift from the strange and uncanny to the magical. This exhibition collects his photos, sculptures, videos and other mixed media works. Walid Raad, Moderna Museet, opens Feb 2 For a long time, society’s sexism held that, with few exceptions, women were to be the subjects of art, not the creators. Thankfully, we’ve gotten a little bit more enlightened over the years, and the past hundred-odd years have seen change on this front, and this exhibition at Artipelag collects together the work of some of the most powerful female artists since 1900. The exhibition also features work that has been marginalised for years, so you might just discover some treasures previously unknown to you. Signature Women, Artipelag, opens Mar 8 Gig The Jesus & Mary Chain It’s always a little difficult to tell if the Jesus & Mary Chain have broken up or not at any one point – the iconic, but combustible Scottish brothers have had their share of splits over the years. But it seems as of now the unit is solid, and they’re heading out on a very special tour. Their second album, Darklands, maybe not quite as celebrated as their debut Psychocandy, but it’s still an outstanding record, and they’re playing it live in full to celebrate its anniversary.
