ed Music Company Sunday March 31st sees the first of a new concert series curated by the DCU Jazz Society at The Vintage Room, Workmans. The inaugural event will feature the music of Grant Green and Joe Henderson performed by Hayley Kavanagh (sax), Eric Doyle (guitar), Giovanny Stanescu (piano), Maciej Blizinski (bass) and Darragh Groome (drums). Admission is 5 clams for students or 8 for everyone else. Doors are at 7:30pm and music starts at 8. Music Current Festival kicks off again and runs from April 2-6 between the Contemporary Music Centre and the Project. Expect talks, workshops, gigs & other such fancy happenings. Freak snow days aside, we are rocketing towards Spring / Summer and there’s certainly no shortage of killer gigs to attend in this dirty oul town… The Aengus Hacket Trio play The Cooler on Saturday, April 6th in collaboration with Improvised Music Company. Hackett’s music combines elements of jazz, rock and electronica and this concert will see the launch of their new album. Three of the country’s finest improvisers will be onstage on the night: Aengus Hackett (guitar), Derek Whyte (bass) and Matthew Jacobson (drums) – big tip! More info: aengushackett.com Sunday, April 7th sees The Dublin Jazz Co-op back at The Vintage Room, Workmans, presenting: Joyology, a collaborative duo featuring Meilana Gillard on voice and tenor sax and John Leighton on piano. Meilana is a saxophonist, vocalist & multiinstrumentalist and John is a pianist, composer and runner of Bennigan’s Jazz Club in Derry. Joyology is a “feelgood melody-focused jazz duo”, formed in 2022. Doors 7:30pm, music from 8. Tickets on Eventbrite. ENSEMBLE MOSATRIC Interesting one upcoming at The Unitarian Church with Ensemble Mosatric & The Tolka Hot Club taking to the stage (or eh, alter) this April 13th for a night of music & dance. Ensemble Mosatric combine violin, cello, vocals and tap dance while exploring different genres; ranging from classical, traditional to jazz. The Tolka Hot Club on the other hand, bring a “body of music from the roaring ‘20s and ‘30s, from both sides of the Atlantic right into the twentyfirst century” along with a repertoire that’s “peppered with Balkan, Latin and Turkish tunes”. That’s a big ol’ yeehaw from me!. PAGE 34 April 20th sees the rising (mega) star jazz vocalist Samara Joy make her National Concert Hall debut. Doors 8pm, tickets €22–32 from NCH.ie. On the following afternoon, April 21st, Victoria Geelan (vocals), Dr. Neil Burns (piano) Rohan Armstrong (double bass) and Andrew McCoubrey (drums) take to the stage at Arthurs for a tribute to Nina Simone on the 21st anniversary of her passing. This is a Sunday afternoon gig with doors at 3:30pm. Tickets on Eventbrite. Also on Apr 21st, later in the evening, The Dublin Jazz Co-op present the Conor Murray Trio at The Vintage Room, Workmans. Expect Conor Murray on bass, Michael Murray on sax & Jay Davis on drums. Doors 7:30pm, music from 8 bells. Tickets on Eventbrite. And finally, star Danish jazz guitarist Mikkel Ploug stops off in Dublin for one night only with his world-renowned trio, featuring bassist Jeppe Skovbakke & Irish drummer Sean Carpio.
