Dublin band Melts are just about to launch their sophomore album, Field Theory on Fuzz Club. I caught up with Eoin Kenny (vocals) and Rob Brady (keys/synths) at a very exciting time for the band. Here are the early highlights of an interview before we descended into a late-night discussion of vintage Sci-Fi, Polish album artwork and the 1972 Munich Olympics cultural program. Does the album have a theme or concept? Eoin: Lyrically, the whole theme of the record is based on the title, Field Theory, which is about how people interact with each other in unseen ways. I took the meaning from like the scientific term of field theory, heat and light and different things travel through space. You don’t see it, but they’re happening. That was the lyrical basis for things that happen in your life, that happen personally, happen to other people, happen to people around you and how it all affects everyone around you. What’s the experience like recording at Black Mountain Studios? Eoin: Amazing. The way we like to work is we usually have songs rehearsed that play live. Then when we get to the studio, because we record live, we warm up and we put down the song as it is there and then. We let the songs just do their thing in the studio. I try not to get in the way of lyrics, just what comes out in the booth I put down, because it feels more natural. Rob: residential is definitely the best way to record an album. Not to go home with PAGE 8 FIELD THEORY - APR 12TH your head spinning, do normal things and get up the next day and make your way to wherever the studio is. You go away and everyone’s waking up at 9 in the morning, you’re making breakfast and everyone’s in the room. As soon as your coffee is done, you’re talking about what you’re doing for the day and you’re doing a take by 10. When you’re there, you’re finishing at the end of the day, having a couple of beers and talking about what you’ve done that day. So, Black Mountain, we couldn’t recommend it more. Beautiful, beautiful place, lovely accommodation, super studio.
