Scene News NIALL MCGUIRK Gig News April 11th sees
Bloody Head bringing their racket over from Nottingham to Anseo with Hubert Selby Jnr Infants and Creepy Future. Bloody Head live shows feel like being run over by a bulldozer of noise and discordant energy and this will be one of those great nights so get along if you can. J Mascis is in the Button Factory the following night, a night of fuzzed up acoustic guitar is guaranteed. Also on that night Burning Realm are launching their new record at Bello Bar. We are excited to see New Model Army making a return to Opium on April 18th . They played a couple of sold out shows last year in the Button Factory celebrating 4 decades of releases. This is a return to normal service but we will still hear some old classics. Coathanger Solution’s album is out in April and available now through Rotators Bandcamp page. Nice melodic punk rock from these Dublin punks who are getting ready for their debut at Rebellion this year. The album is being launched in the Thomas House on April 20th. Another festival coming up in Bohs in May and part of Bohs diy punk @20 lineup of events is the Punk Rock Weekender on May 18th + 19th. The Restarts are coming over to play both days but there’s a huge cast of Irish punks playing out too and celebrating diy punk in Ireland. This would fill a much bigger venue so is bound to sell out quickly. Saturday also has Dropping Bombs, Trouble Pilgrims, Nichts, Rant, PAGE 38 50 Foot Woman, Creepy Future, Bar Tape and more, while the following day has Sluggers 3, M.A.D, Def Nettle, Scrum and Dead Moon Rising. DIY punk is as active as ever. This months playlist Steve Conte - Concrete Jungle - Wicked Cool Records Steve Conte from New York Dolls has teamed up with Andy Partridge from XTC for his new record. It’s riff laden pop rock right throughout. With backing vocals from Glen Matlock, Steve Lillywhite, Danko Jones and many more, it is a homage to a New York punk rock scene but with one where they’ve ran back to the garage to record it. Mad Caddies - Arrows Room 117 - Sham Records Ska punk legends Mad Caddies have a new record out. It has their usual mix of skanking sounds with a punky feel at times, but with more of a nod to Jamaica this time than the SoCal hardcore scene. F.O.D - Once a Virgin - Double Helix Records This is the sixth release from Belgian hardcore crew F.O.D. 12 tracks of singalong tuneful hardcore ala NOFX. The theme is one of aging in a world where playing music might have been once a young person’s game. It’s fast, catchy and melodic, rather like their peers Bad Religion. This is intelligent punk rock well worth exploring. Standards - Fruit Galaxy - Sheet Happens We are all well aware of Irish math rockers Redneck Manifesto and one of their offspring Jape. Standards mix the two and we get a complex fancy math rock affair. Part dreamy, part floating, this takes that instrumental genre and puts it through a Nintendo ringer bouncing around like Super Mario Bros playing Redneck’s tunes. Interesting. Ghost Work - Light A Candle For The Lonely - Spartan Many moons ago Seattle rockets Seaweed kept us entertained with a post hardcore rock sound big on riffs and tunes. Well this four piece punk rock supergroup features members of Seaweed, Snapcase and Minus The Bear on this 11 track record. Never stopping and when Covid put distance between people, creativity still flowed from these four acquaintances. Totally Slow - The darkness Intercepts - Refresh Records Punk rock music with angry lyrics reflecting a world that asks way more questions than answers. It has left Totally Slow scratching their heads and reaching for the only thing they really know, their music and words. A reflection of their growing unease around the state of the world where political leadership comes more from theatre than ideology and we can feel like we're trapped in our seats watching the craziness unfold. Sons of Alpha Centauri - Pull - Exile on Mainstream A follow up to their third album Push - Pull see the Sons Of Alpha Centauri still moody, broody and riffing their hardcore along. Similar to the aforementioned Seaweed, it has that post hardcore sound that saw us punk kids nodding our heads back and forth slower as we slipped into the sound and feel of hardcore. Not forgetting .. Conservative Military Image have a new single out ‘Guilty Until Compliant’. Hot and heavy and pure, class, punk rock. Get on this image and shake that fist. Menstrual Cramps new single ‘Class War’ is about the importance of joining a union and holding your workplace and peers to account with collective bargaining and activism.
