For the next three decades, Dennis provided photos for passports and driving licences, took individual and family portraits, and captured images of the patrons in the family bar which he presided over. Developing his skills as a photographer outside the studio, he also photographed weddings, religious ceremonies, theatre productions, sporting events, and a variety of other local occasions. Over his career as a photographer, Dennis exposed an estimated 50,000 negatives before his passing in 1985. A large selection of these were destroyed by a fire in 1981 but many also remain. The remnants of the studio’s darkroom are present to this day, though barely recognisable, in the upstairs loft at the back of the bar which is run by his sons, Lawrence and Dennis. Small Town Portraits is a collection of faces from the place. dennisdinneenarchive.com, €47 Dineen’s Bar, 20 Main Street, Macroom, Co. Cork. BLÁTHANNA FIÁIN TO FALL FABLE Besides offering eloquent and insightful critiques of literature on our print pages, Alice Wickenden has been creating her own body of wondrous work. To Fall Fable is a selection of poems in which “meaning, memory and plants are all overgrown… Here a forest learns to speak its confusion; Adam and Eve fall from the garden of Eden; a song is accidentally bitten to death, and yet – always – love resprouts. To Fall Fable offers a fall which occurs again and again, finding resonance and promise through multiple iterations of the same. Desire is ultimately revealed to be fecund: spawning both joy and trauma, abuse and hope.” It ushers in 2021, arriving on January 1. Shot by Andrew Nuding, her collection is replete with floral symbols in “a reference to the euphemistic way in which female sexuality is and was expressed and repressed in Ireland.” The allusion to flowers further plays out in the constructive techniques, with bodices drooping in petals, and small floral buds peeking through embroideries on seams. The NCAD textile graduate feels this period of disruption has its upside. “I do think digital runway shows make a lot of sense from many angles; it allows companies and designers to impact on a much bigger audience in a more immediate and curated way. It’s more inclusive, more cost effective and less environmentally taxing.” roisinpierce.com
