Ambitious move I recently spoke to Swedish celebrity chef Tareq Taylor about the travails that the restaurant business is currently going through. He ascertained that he’d be ok himself, but that it was painful to see so many people’s entire life’s work being shattered with, according to Tareq, seemingly no help whatsoever coming from the government. He felt that the restaurant business was just being sacrificed while the measures implemented have been tailor-made for aiding, for example, the manufacturing industries. As the restaurant business has given him everything that he’s got, he has felt an obligation to do whatever he can to help out. But Tareq and his colleagues are paddling upstream, and his petition to the government, a cry for help for the whole industry, still goes unanswered. But despite all the difficulties the pandemic has thrust upon the restaurant trade, despite perhaps a right to feel wronged by the lack of support from the authorities, some restaurateurs are still launching new concepts, opening new restaurants and making ambitious moves. One such venture, Brasserie Astoria, has earned a little more anticipation than most. What was once a beautiful 820- seat cinema and theatre, complete with a lavishly marble-decorated lobby, coveted spots on the balconies and space for the orchestra to accompany the silent films that were all the rage when Astoria opened back in 1928, has now been transformed into a restaurant. But while the building itself, and the history it carries, does pique people’s interest, the major pull comes from the name behind the new effort. Björn Frantzén, of course, runs Sweden’s only three Michelin-star restaurant and while the sweet treats of Frantzén might feel out of reach for some Stockholmers, a visit to Brasserie Astoria certainly won’t. Now this address on Nybrogatan just might be about to regain some of its former glory. Here’s hoping.
