y HOWTH CASTLE COOKERY SCHOOL GEORGE’S NEW GAFF Located within the historic walls of Howth Castle, Howth Castle Cookery School recently unveiled its newly transformed kitchen, featuring an exciting collaboration with luxury German appliance brand Gaggenau. A centre of culinary excellence for over 260 years, the kitchen at Howth Castle was originally built in the mid-18th century, and today provides a platform for aspiring chefs of all ages to learn the art of cooking in a unique historic setting. For resident chefs Sarah Hughes and finedining expert John Carty, the big reveal - which includes precision-engineered ovens and induction hobs - successfully marries centuries-old tradition with state-of-the-art technology, while reflecting the School’s ongoing commitment to innovation. They offer a wide variety of hands-on cooking classes suitable for all skill levels, ranging in price from €95, including one for ‘Teens and Tweens’ aimed at fostering a love for cooking amongst younger folk. In addition to individual classes, tailored corporate experiences are also available, including a hands-on ‘Catch and Cook’ experience, which involves fishing for your lunch in Dublin Bay. @HowthCastleCookerySchool CHECK THEM! National Breast Cancer Research Institute Ireland has joined forces with Spar and Eurospar for an awareness campaign that uses the behaviour of checking Best Before dates to direct people to check something far more important. The stark reality is that every year, around 3,587 women and approximately thirty men are diagnosed with breast cancer in Ireland. While research indicates that 86% of Irish shoppers regularly check food product dates, it seems that only 35% of women are self-checking regularly for breast cancer. As part of the awareness raising campaign, limited edition boob-shaped labels have been designed to get people to check their breasts every month. Shoppers are encouraged to scan the QR code on the label, add their ‘Breast Before’ date to their mobile calendar and every month they’ll be reminded to get checking. The campaign message is simple and direct – “There’s a date to eat your food by, and now there’s a date to check your boobs by!” As Prof Michael Kerin, Research Director, National Breast Cancer Research Institute puts it, “Regular check-ups with your healthcare provider and monthly self-examination are among the healthiest habits we can all adopt.” And for those who can, Daffodil Day is well worth supporting this month too. @breastcancer_research George’s Fish Shop made something of a splash recently by moving into a brand new space next door to their original premises in Monkstown. In a nice homage to the seafaring roots of founder George Rogerson, the exterior of the new spot is decked out in a lovely solid shade of blue. Behind the counter siblings Graham and Lisa Rogerson are warmly encouraging lovers of all things marine to drop in and choose from a fabulous selection including their signature seafood platters and ‘the freshest fish in town, served with a side of great vibes’. We wish them all the very best in their new home. @georgesfishshop CHINA TANG If the dishes on its Insta feed are anything to go by, diners are in for a real treat at a new Modern Cantonese restaurant which recently opened its doors in Dun Laoghaire. In addition to the signature dish of Roasted Peking Duck at China Tang, we’re intrigued by the prospect of sinking our teeth into their charcoal Gold Yolk Lava Custard Buns, which feature a warm filling of creamy custard enveloped in a soft charcoal-infused exterior. Available as part of their Dim Sum Brunch Menu, we’re told that they’re perfect for sharing. Bookings via chinatang.ie 32
