WORDS Martina Murray MULLINGAR WILD BEER FEST BEA
MISH BOY As the weather continues to improve, the prospect of a quick trip out of the city for Mullingar’s Wild Beer Festival is very much on our radar. The one-day booze fest promises a hoppy day out filled with unique and flavourful wild beers from a host of local and international breweries. Aimed at beer connoisseurs and newbies alike, there’ll be lots of opportunities to sample some of the most intriguing wild beers in the country, while enjoying a tune or two from live musical performers. The event takes place at local hostelry Smiddy’s from 2pm – 9pm on Saturday April 12th. Tickets €10 via Eventbrite. Huge congrats to scribe and historian Donal Fallon who recently celebrated his nuptials in style at his favourite city centre waterhole. To mark the big day the legends that are Grogans pulled out all the stops – quite literally. As Donal tells it, this included pulling so many pints of Beamish that the tap actually broke! In a nice gesture afterwards, those behind the bar gifted the couple the tap as a memento. We wish them every happiness together, and we’re also looking forward to getting our hands on Donal’s forthcoming book on the history of Dublin’s pubs when it rolls off the presses later this year. @threecastlesburning GET OFF YOUR HORSE A new Country and Western Bar is set to open its doors in Dublin this summer, next door to popular Talbot Street musical hostelry The Celt. The traditional Irish pub made a strong showing in the 2024 Irish Pub Awards, where it was lauded as the Best Music Pub in Dublin. Owner Noel Tynan hopes that the new spot will be open before June, but acknowledged that this is dependent on a number of factors, beyond his immediate control. In the meantime visitors are invited to come and enjoy a great bar menu, marvel at the interior and stay for the terrific live music sessions which take place seven days a week. @theceltbar Secrets of our Past, Revealed!
