pany January and blues go together, and Dublin’s jazzers are keeping things blue in the best sense all through the month. If you need to avoid the family’s new year’s resolutions, it’s not a bad time of year to head out of the house for some music, with a warm seat by the fire at Arthur’s, or a muchquieter-than-December pint at JT Pim’s. The John Moriarty Quartet kicks things off on Friday 3rd January for some fluid and well-polished jazz, with Darragh Hennessy on piano, Dave Redmond bass and Shane O’Donovan on drums. After that, there’s some more fusionstyle tunes, with originals and standard from the Sean Furey Quintet on Sunday afternoon 5th January (doors 3pm, tickets on Eventbrite) and some swing mixed with jazz-styled modern songs from Bobby Mc & the Dukes on Tuesday 7th (doors 8pm, tickets on Eventbrite). Kilkenny saxophonist Adam Nolan is back for Jazz at Juno on Wednesday 8th, joined by Killian Browne on piano, Derek Whyte on bass and Christian Conefery on drums for a night of jazz giant John Coltrane, going from Giant Steps to A Love Supreme. For an out-out night out, the Glass Mask Theatre’s GMT Jazz Club is back on Thursday January 9th and 30th with an old-school New York-style evening, featuring a live jazz band. The generationcrossing Kind of New series celebrates two years of concerts with a jam session at Dún Laoghaire LexIcon Theatre on Friday January 10th, featuring a set with vocalist Jenna Harris, guitarist Shaun Garry, pianist Marta Perrone piano, Diarmuid Lally on bass, and Riccardo Proietti Panzini on drums. Saturday, January 11th sees “Aren’t Blakey: Art Blakey Tribute” at Arthurs, featuring Linley Hamilton on trumpet, Scott Flanigan on piano, Cormac O’Brien on bass, Kevin Brady on drums, Colm O’Hara on trombone & Daniel Rorke on sax. Doors 9pm, tickets on eventbrite. The Cookin’ Sessions Jam is back on Sunday January 12th at JT Pim’s with an opening set from Oceanna. 7:30, tickets on eventbrite. Friday January 17th has pianist Dan Costa’s trio at Arthur’s (doors 8:30, tickets eventbrite), and Turkish group Gripin at The Button Factory (doors 7:30, tickets eventbrite). Ronan Guilfoyle’s new Joycean suite ‘Earwicker’s Dream’, based on Finnegans Wake gets an outing at The Cooler on Saturday 18th, featuring spoken word from Janet Moran, Nguyen Le on guitar, Michael Buckley on saxophones, and Matthew Jacobson on drums. For Sunday afternoon classics on 19th at Arthur’s, the StraightUp Organ Trio plays twists on standards, with Myles Drennan (hammond), Hugh Buckley (guitar), and Jerry Ferily (drums). Finishing up the Arthur’s Sunday afternoons on Sunday 26th is internationally acclaimed guitarist Phil Robson in his hard-swinging trio with Dave Redmond on bass and Dominic Mullan on drums. Doors 3pm, tickets eventbrite. Looking forward to February, pianist Leopoldo Osio’s follow-on to CEO Experiment is back on Thursday 6th February for a show at The Cooler. Next Experiment features some fantastic international players in Gonzalo del Val on drums, Gianni Gagliardi on saxophone, and Peter Erdei on bass together with Leopoldo on piano, and Paul Dunlea on trombone.
