By all accounts they were all fantastic shows and we were blessed with some great weather too. Hats off to all the show staff and promoters for top class organisation, though it would be great to see more local acts on some of the support line ups. My personal gigs of the Summer so far all happened indoors - The Boo Radleys and The Waeve at The Grand Social and Clara Treacy at The Workmans - but it was great to be in a field or a park with friends enjoying the sounds. As a former promoter myself I know just how hard it can be to get audiences into gigs at this time of year so keep an eye on our listings pages for some super shows coming up. Festival wise things are heating up as the brilliant All Together Now and Indiependence loom over the August Bank Holiday weekend, while mid August sees my favourite, the intimate boutique Festival Another Love Story, happen in the lovely grounds of Killyon Manor in Kildare. Trycksak 5041 0004 As we get close to back to school time it's the turn of Wider Than Pictures to dominate the gig calendar. Situated in the courtyard and environs of Collins Barracks it really is a sweet space for a city bound Festival. We were delighted to chat to two of its headliners - Mick Flannery and YUNGBLUD - ahead of their shows and we look forward to also checking out some great young Irish bands like Sprints, Just Mustard, modernlove and Really Good Time as they open for the more established acts. Another superb citybound Festival happening in Dublin 7 (tis the place to be!) this month is Musictown, a beautifully curated series of shows happening in The Complex, Arran St East. Creative Director, Leagues O’Toole of Foggy Notions has invited the Improvised Music Company (IMC), Dublin Digital Radio & Crash Ensemble on board as guest curators and they’ve managed to hit their “A snapshot of what is happening culturally amongst innovative artists across generations” brief brilliantly. Our scribe Adhamh O’Caoimh previews the Festival in this issue and also is delighted to announce the emergence of The Cooler, a brand new venue within The Complex (for Jazz and Improvised Music) that's officially launching during the Festival. We also feature Dubliner Keeley as she launches her debut album ‘Floating Above Everything Else’, a record that is borne from her blog chronicles about the tragic case of the German teenager Inga Maria Hauser who was brutally murdered in Northern Ireland in 1988 and shine a light on the great people behind Minding Creative Minds, an organisation that are constantly doing great work combatting issues that face the creative sectors throughout Ireland. Last, but not least, we feature a wonderful appreciation of the late, great Christy Dignam, written from the heart by his pal Eugene Connolly. I first met Christy when we shared a long bus journey from Dublin to Birmingham in 1983 when a load of Irish Bowie fans travelled to see him play in Milton Keynes and our paths crossed many times over the years, particularly in the latter years when our mutual love of the Starman brought us professionally into the same orbit. He was a true gent, a man for all occasions, a great singer and a Prince among his people. Rest In Peace Christy. EUGENE CONNOLLY & CHRISTY DIGNAM PAGE 3 S E V A R N Ä E M N K T
