Recommends Gig Previews GLEESONFEST - SOUNDHOUSE
- JULY 21ST The Time Tunnel team present a night dedicated to the memory of the revered local promoter Luke Gleeson who sadly passed away in May 2020. GleesonFest brings together the community of musicians, DJ’s and music fans Luke fostered and nurtured with his Retro Revival Indie Club. Luke was the first champion of Fontaines DC and always went out on a limb to support the acts he loved and believed in. His passion for music, his dry wit and all round humanity is much missed and this will be a wonderful way to celebrate the indelible mark he left on the Irish music scene. Meryl Streek, Protex and Stereotype are amongst the acts performing on the night. SUMMER OF SOUL - WORKMANS - JULY 21ST Summer Of Soul Dublin is inspired by the amazing Harlem Music Festival of 1969 and showcases the amazing talents of the people in our local community as we unite together in this Summer of Struggle to fight against Racism, Queerphobia and Fascism. Poetry from 8:30pm with Christeen, live music from 9pm with Benita & Vicky, Aoife & Ylory, Tadgh, Toshin and late DJ’s Jowy, Sharon Raymond and Jenten with speeches between acts. PAGE 4 THE LONDON AFROBEAT ORCHESTRA - JULY 22ND THEE U.F.O & SEARCH RESULTS - WORKMANS CELLAR - JULY 22ND Final date of a short double headline tour for two of Dublin’s most exciting new bands, Thee U.F.O and Search Results. Both bands have been getting a lot of attention lately for their energetic shows and quality releases; Thee U.F.O’s psyche album ‘Ponderous Fug’ was released last year on Fuzzed Up and Astromoon Records while lo-fi indie outfit Search Results have just released ‘Flower Rock Rain’ which is the first single to be taken from their upcoming debut album ‘Information Blip’ which is scheduled for release on September 15th. LONDON ASTROBEAT ORCHESTRA - THE GRAND SOCIAL - JULY 22ND Affectionately nicknamed the ‘African Talking Heads’, The orchestra perform the iconic Stop Making Sense in what’s bound to be a highlight of the month. When you consider the afrobeat vibes, that run through all the best Talking Heads albums, it’s both appropriate & correct that this collective of musicians, from West Africa, Europe & beyond should offer this completely unique, razor sharp, liquid funk & jaw-droppingly tight take, on the finest of Mr David Byrne & Co’s timeless compositions. RUFUS WAINWRIGHT - FOLKOCRACY - NCH - JULY 22ND Folkocracy is Rufus Wainwright revisiting his roots, of childhood summers spent at folk festivals and watching his famous family on stage. ‘Folkocracy’ is Rufus’ 12th studio album and features an all-star cast of guests including Brandi Carlile, Chaka Khan, David Byrne, Anohni, Sheryl Crow, John Legend, Nicole Scherzinger and his family of course among others. For the tour, he has assembled a four-piece band of amazing musicians and two incredible singers, his sister Lucy Wainwright Roche and Petra Haden, who will sing the parts of most of the guests from the album. Unmissable. THURSTON MOORE GROUP - WHELANS - JULY 24TH At the forefront of the alternative rock scene since the early 80’s as one of the blessed members of Sonic Youth, Thurston Moore is a bona-fide legend so a chance to witness a genuine guitar wielding god up this close shouldn’t be missed. His latest work from his seventh solo full-length album ‘By The Fire’ has garnered great reviews and with his group in tow this gig should produce the expected fireworks from his trusty Fender Jazzmaster. MEN I TRUST - VICAR ST. - JULY 27TH This date was added due to demand and it’s not hard to see why. Montreal’s Men I Trust are the genuine article, a band in full control of their sound and it’s a glorious one. New single ‘Ring Of Past’ encapsulates the MIT magic, slinky electronic rhythms and lush instrumental arrangements skirting under Emma Proulx’s airy vocal melodies creating a hazy, blissed out soundscape. Dreampop at its finest. JAMES YORKSTON & NINA PERSSON - LIBERTY HALL THEATRE - JULY 27TH Put a Scottish folk mainstay and a Swedish pop luminary together, add an orchestra and what do ya get? James Yorkston latest song cycle ‘The Great White Sea Eagle’ is redolent of long days spent watching boats come and go in a Highland harbour. It could have been slow going but Yorkstons stroke of genius was inviting the brilliant Cardigans singer Persson to join the project and it clicked. Perssons voice is so recognisable it’s like a beacon guiding listeners into the foggy world of Yorkstons vintage folk musings. A rare chance to catch two greats in concert together.
