JULY-AUG 23 ANNA MEIKE, ADRIAN CROWLEY, NATALIA B
EYLISS & EIMER REIDY, AOIFE WOLF - THE COMPLEX - JULY 27TH It’s brilliant to see the Smithfield arts centre The Complex finally bearing fruit. Situated just a few doors down from our favourite boozer, The Hacienda on Arran St East, the venue is kicking ass with its wonderful range of events and exhibitions and is a truly great addition to our performance scene. The brilliantly curated Musictown has set up base here for its program and this show looks like the pick of the bunch. Anna Meike’s latest album ‘Theatre’ is one of the best Irish releases in decades and will surely feature in critics’ top ten lists in years to come as its inherent beauty and power reveals itself over time. A stellar cast makes this unmissable. BORN THIS WAY - KARA KALUA, ZAPHO, COCO RI, SOFIA GOOD, DOLLFACE & MORE - THE WORKMANS - JULY 27TH Following the cancellation of the LGBTQ+ Drag Show in Carlow’s Seven Oaks Hotel due to homophobic threats to the organisers, Ex Oh Promotions are bringing this show back to life - and bigger than ever. All three originally booked queens; Kara Kalua, Coco Ri and Sofia Good will take to the Workmans Main Stage, while queer musicians Zapho, Dollface & more tbc perform their hits in the Cellar stage below in a double show extravaganza. CABL (W/TEN HAIL MARYS) - THE WORK MAN’S - JULY 29TH Excellent line up for the latest edition of Who’s This?, a monthly curation of upcoming Irish acts who make you ask that very question while promoting and cultivating a stronger community for upcoming and established Irish bands. Our scribe Garry Baylon described CABL’s sound as “a cacophony of blissful noise” and recent gigs have seen full houses so defo a show to check out. JAYNE - THE WORKMANS - JULY 30TH Ably supported by Paddy Shanahan and Phoenix & Wolfe, the Limerick jazz songstress showcases her delightful debut album Pass The Test (reviewed this issue by Lorna Brown, “a gem of a record”). Pass The Test is a body of work that sees the former session singer breakout and forge a sumptuous harmonic opus that fuses jazz and soul beautifully. HAVANA ROOTS - THE SOUNDHOUSE - AUG 4TH Havana Roots is a mashup of traditional Son Cubano sounds with the nearby Jamaican Reggae and Ska influence. This orchestra is known for taking classic Cuban tunes - think Buena Vista Social Club - and giving them a fresh, new twist using reggae grooves and the upbeat energy of ska, creating an uplifting sound that will have you dancing all night. DJ Calambre follows. FLUBLAH + DRYING WEATHER + BLAZER - FIBBER MAGEES - AUG 11TH In case you didn’t hear the town crier - a live music extravaganza of mediaeval proportions promises to kick off the Fibber’s renaissance on Friday 11 August, featuring fuzzed-up, 90s-inspired indie rock from hither and yon. One, nay, two, nay, THREE ensembles will serenade the paying public with blissed out riffs that could inspire even the Bard himself. THE PHIL LYNOTT CONVENTION - THE WELL - AUG 19TH The convention returns to The Well to celebrate the music of Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy on what would have been Phil’s 74th Birthday. Following a sell-out debut show last year, the second edition of the convention features Ireland’s longest established and premier No.1. Thin Lizzy tribute act, Thin Az Lizzy, who have been on the road since 1995. Celebrating one of Lizzy’s great guitarists and an important artist in his own right, UK tribute act Forever Moore promise a rousing set dedicated to the late, great Gary Moore while two members of Sweden’s Tribute band Just Lizzy - Bosse and Magnus - interpret the essence of Phil Lynott songs acoustically, from the early years, right up to the favourites we know and love so well. SWANS - THE ACADEMY - AUGUST 21ST An experimental rock band formed in 1982 by Michael Gira, New York’s Swans are legends in their own lifetime. Initially part of the no wave scene, Swans have, through various iterations, contributed to the development of noise rock, post-punk, industrial, post-rock and their confrontational live shows have garnered a legion of fans who wallow in the bands notorious intensity. New album ‘The Beggar’ reflects Gira’’s post pandemic optimism and finds the band still experimenting, still in flux. We recommend!. WIDER THAN PICTURES - COLLINS BARRACKS - AUGUST 21ST TO 27TH Another great space that’s pleasantly landed on our laps as an event venue is the courtyard of the National Museum of Ireland in Collins Barracks, Smithfield, Dublin 7. Easy to get to and well thought out it’s a great setting for the Wider Than Pictures series of shows which sees some fab lineups that incorporate seasoned International artists with emerging Irish talent. We cover the series in depth later in the mag but, at a glance, Future Islands with Just Mustard and Sprints looks like a doozy. CABL - JULY 29TH PAGE 5
