21 Autumn 2018 The Standard Model Helena Granströ
m’s background in theoretical physics and mathematics is apparent in her brilliant novel The Standard Model, set in an accurately depicted physics institution. She affectionately describes the oddball scientists and their interpersonal relations. When one of them discovers a model that can combine quantum mechanics with the theory of relativity, it seems that she has succeeded in discovering no less than the ultimate nature of space-time. But this makes her call into question whether she has really understood anything about the world. Ever since her debut with the essay The Measure of All Things (2008), Helena Granström has devoted herself to stringent and provocative critiques of civilisation in various literary forms: prose, poetry, drama, cultural articles and manifesto. In particular, she scrutinises the late modern concepts of nature, children and animals.
