Bland mycket annat. ho am I? I suppose I should begin this introduction by answering the question I have been answering since I first came to Sweden: “Why would an American – from Florida, no less – want to move to Växjö?” It is really quite simple. Love. Crazy, heart-palpitating, complicated, passionate, make-your-friends-sick, quit-your-joband-sell-your-house-to-move-to-Sweden Love. Punkt slut. It is rather easy to find oneself swept away in whimsical daydreams of moving abroad to join the man you love with whom you desire to spend your life. It is also quite easy to neglect to consider all of the complex logistics that moving abroad entails. My last day of work was 9/11 (totally intentional) of last year and my flight was scheduled for 11 October. When I said, “Yes!!!!”, the last thing on my mind was that I would have one month to sell my house, my furniture, my car, and to determine what items to ship – and not to ship – overseas. Have you ever been forced to determine the value of your personal goods by the kilo? Suddenly every book, every photo and paper, every scarf, every coat, every sundry decorative item is subject to scrutiny one seldom has to face when moving across town or even within the country. But when an international moving company is valuating the cost to ship your shit overseas, you have to ask yourself, “Is this worth its weight in kilos?” No. I had to scale down, way down, and had a good old-fashioned American yard sale; you know, where you price all your worldly possessions depressingly low, stage them outdoors, and wait for the cheapest hagglers around to come and offer you one sweaty U.S. dollar for the fine crystal you’ve had gathering dust for years in the back of your display case. What a demeaning, humbling, minimal part of the relocation process. So what of the items I deemed worthy of shipping? And what of the most prized possession: Me? Well, my remaining personal goods were on a very slow boat to Göteborg. I was two strong margaritas in and boarding my eight-hour flight to Copenhagen. In retrospect, I think reality hit when they began dinner service. I watched the way each person around me navigated their meal and found myself mimicking their progression. Wine first. Then cut bread. Then organize utensils. Etc. I felt like a sociologist observing the behaviors of an obscure tribal culture. But I was the savage! Suddenly America felt more to me like some distant Third World country devoid of eating utensils and etiquette. Everyone around me was comfortable, and I felt so... different. I still wonder how the flight attendants knew I wasn’t Swedish or Norwegian, because they spoke to me in English every time. What made me appear so foreign to them? Was it my black hair and dark eyes? Or perhaps the cavewoman-like manner with which I was observing my surroundings? I opened a book – Jean Baudrillard’s America (not patriotic at all; quite the opposite, in fact) – and found myself reading the same page over and over, unable to focus. My eyes grew so tired and my mind full. As they dimmed the lights, I faded out (well, passed out) and abruptly awoke as we arrived in Copenhagen. Thank you, Xanax. All that I remember next was the way my King’s blue eyes lit up and the way I almost fainted when I walked past customs, barreled through those double doors with my four suitcases piled high, and saw him standing there beaming, waving a Swedish flag. “Welcome home, my love” he said. My new homeland! As we drove over the bridge to Sweden, the sun was rising and seemed to rest in the center of the road, blinding, welcoming, masking the vast unknown awaiting me on the other side. I rolled down the window and screamed, “Sweden, I am in you!!!” (to be as cliche and raunchy as possible). And so began the next phase of this wild foreign ride! To be continued... s TEXT: CARLY HALE Lars Alrutz och Maria Lönngren, Växjöfabriken.
