Print is a luxury. While you could list our competitors back in 2004, every individual with ever-decreasing attention spans, hewn to social media constitutes competition now. And we are not alone with this conundrum. As for the city, we’re sure you are well familiar with the disappearance of our cultural spaces and proliferation of hotels and student accommodation. Turning the city centre into a distillery-laden playground for tourists with high-street stores and a smattering of independents is the distinctly bleak prospect we are facing. However, we must persevere, champion and hold higher powers to account. reser Lu y sopecublin. This copy might have been My favourite moment from this issue, and my biggest recommendation, is the climax of Tim MacGabhann’s last missive from Mexico where the sense of a connection between foreign folk traditions and Irish ones is brought on by something more powerful than just déjà vu. It’s derived instead from a deeper resonance about what it is that “home” could or should feel like, and it’s a wonderful piece of writing, that is illustrated excellently by Cecilia Rangel’s photography. A ase scen 15 years ago, this month, the first edition of this magazine appeared on the streets of Dublin. Annie was on the cover. The Norwegian singer had just released her debut album Anniemal. In hindsight, it was a peculiar cover choice with which to launch a magazine about Dublin but our Scandinavian roots were present and still are. And, yes, hindsight is smug. We spoke to Toni (sic) Walsh about 25 years of clubbing, Vincent Browne was just abut to launch The Village magazine, the Luas had finally got on track, the Dublin Electronic Arts Festival (DEAF) was entering its third year and we reviewed the 101 Talbot, Wongs of Ranelagh and Brownes Brasserie on Stephen’s Green. In an interview, journalist Eamon Dunphy was asked if we should have an elected mayor and bemoaned the “rip-off” culture. And so, 15 years later, we take stock. We are still hanging in sent ts mer lth we b n expect d (Sk to her h The death of David Bowie hung heavy over TD Towers this month, a gobsmacking blow to receive on a dark January morning. The overwhelming influence of his artistry was visible in the multitude of ways he touched those who admired him, as a rock’n’roll star, a pop visionary, an experimental musician, a keen collaborator and an icon of transgression, impossible to pin down to any one defining moment from a lifetime of creativity. And obviously, that’s only the distant stuff you recognise as a fan rather than his own private legacy as a family man and friend to many. But even from that remove, the pull of his artistic gravity is strong and reassuring. RIP. ug ts and imoves. nevanagut cas imbla d with hk betw ew fans. Great b efled. Leaving aside the on-going scandalous dereliction of the Iveagh Market which the Council is trying to take possession of, there are other developments taking shape. Our lead feature talks to the various parties affected by the proposed €3m development of the Smithfield Fruit - Ian Lamont k’et whic ienmebea uc GRAND DESIGNS Right 2019, let’s be ‘avin ya! Dramatic resolutions be gone, it’s really all about the incremental changes for these are the ones you might stick with and see snowball into actual change. We tap into a cast of 19 creatives who we admire and get them to share their 2018 highlights, their hopes for 2019 and their own heroes. It makes you appreciate that Dublin is really a town and we all lean, rather than trample, on each other to accrue the success we desire. And it’s all about setting aside some personal time where possible to pursue something for yourself. Brendan Duffy tapped us up with his fantastic ‘personal portrait project’ on some of the ukulele players who gather in the Stag’s Head every Tuesday. Ross Killeen realised his fantastic short film 99 Problems outside the daily staple of producing and directing ads for clients. It’s always good to have something filed under ‘for me’ which ultimately garners more satisfaction, well being and sometimes, attention in the right quarters. We look forward to you sharing your ‘for me’ ideas with us.
