LFV Annual report 2021 1
DIRE C T OR S ' REPOR T ENVIR ONMENT AND SUS T AI
NABILITY L F V 2021 In September 2021, LFV received a Government assignment that aims to propose how the airspace below an altitude of 2,900 meters should be designed to create better conditions for more environmentally friendly flights to Swedish airports. The assignment will be partially reported on 31 March 2022 and finalised on 31 August 2023. RESEARCH ON HIGH ALTITUDE EFFECTS In recent years, a large number of research reports have been published that strengthen the idea that the environmental effects resulting from high-altitude emissions are more extensive than previously thought. Emissions of nitrogen oxides, water vapor and high-altitude particles account for two thirds of aviation's environmental impact according to the latest estimates. LFV is a partner in research projects that aim to weigh high-altitude effects against the extra fuel consumption and the carbon dioxide emissions resulting from aviation avoiding problem areas in the atmosphere. Avoiding certain areas in the airspace due to high-altitude effects can have major operational consequences for LFV's air traffic control and this issue is therefore monitored. DIRECT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT LFV also affects the environment through its operations. The internal environmental work is conducted in a structured and systematic manner with the support of LFV's environmental management system. The work aims to reduce the environmental impact caused by the activities. Measures are taken to, among other things, reduce energy use and reduce fuel consumption in the operations. LFV works with behavioural changes and other measures to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The following significant environmental aspects have been in focus during the year: • energy use in buildings and facilities • emissions from business travel • procurement and purchasing of products and services. ENERGY USE The goal is to reduce our own energy use by 4 percent per square metre area for our owned properties and premises during the period 2021–2025 (base year 2019). The 2021 goal was to reduce energy use by 1 percent per square metre area compared to 2019.As of 2021, usage has decreased by 4 percent per square metre area. External weather conditions and many employees working from home during the year have contributed to reduced energy use. LFV uses energy for heating/cooling of own and leased premises. In addition, energy use is mainly from the operation of the operational systems used at LFV's air traffic control facilities. LFV keeps energy use at a low level by only buying green electricity. For heating, 97 percent is renewable, and the goal is for this percentage to increase. BUSINESS TRAVEL LFV's goal is to reduce the climate impact during the period 2021–2025 by increasing the number of travel-free meetings. The increase in travel-free meetings in 2020 led to LFV reducing CO2 emissions from business travel by 70 percent, which reached the goal of reducing the amount by 3 percent compared to 2019. The reason for the large decrease during the year is the ongoing pandemic. The number of virtual meetings increased by 45 percent in 2021. LFV also works to reduce emissions from business travel by choosing means of transport with as little use of fossil fuels as possible. All company cars have a low environmental impact compared with other cars on the market, and LFV's employees must also choose rental cars with a low environmental impact where practicable. PROCUREMENT AND PURCHASING Since 2018, LFV complies with the National Agency for Public Procurement's sustainability requirements. This ensures that LFV constantly develops the handling of sustainability requirements in connection with our procurements. AGENDA 2030 – LFV'S WORK WITH GLOBAL SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS We work with the goals where we have the greatest opportunity to contribute to creating long-term, sustainable, economic, social, and environmental development and promote a peaceful and inclusive society for all. This applies to goals 5, 7, 9, 11, and 16. We In September 2021, LFV received a Government assignment to propose how the airspace below an altitude of 2 900 meters should be designed to create better conditions for more environmentally friendly flights to Swedish airports. work with some of them both nationally and internationally. There is ongoing work, tied to LFV's main goals, which creates conditions so that we, within LFV, will contribute to achieving the Agenda 2030 goals. 33
