ew bank holiday helps to get February off to a good start, and Dublin’s jazzers are keeping the good stuff going through the month this year. The Dublin Jazz Co-op is back on Sunday 9th with an afternoon slot of powerhouse improvising. Violist Joanna Mattrey and saxophonist Nick Roth, take over the back room of the Cobblestone. 1pm, tickets eventbrite. Guitarist Bruce Forman and his trio stop in at Arthur’s on Thursday 13th leaning on the classics for a bebop-inspired evening, and if you’re stepping out for Valentine’s, Arthur’s has the evening covered, with a Chet Baker tribute from the Charlie Moon Quintet kicking off at 6pm, and The Lounge Lizards giving a blues tinge to the night later on. Tickets eventbrite. For a more fusion afternoon, Mark Redmond & Chris Colloton blend trad and jazz on Sunday 16th at Arthur’s, 3:30pm tickets eventbrite. The NCH hosts American singer-songwriter Madeleine Peyroux on the 19th, touring on the back of her first all-original album. 8pm, tickets nch.ie On Thursday 20th at The Cooler, pianist Francesco Turrisi gets back to his jazz roots, stepping off a whirlwind of touring his Grammy-winning work with Rhiannon Giddens to play back into the best of his lyrical 38 instrumental style, together with bassist Derek Whyte and drummer Matthew Jacobson. Doors 7:30pm, tickets improvisedmusic.ie Spring will very much have sprung when you hear Emilie Conway’s ‘You Must Believe in Spring’ on the 21st at Bewley’s, 7pm, or for wilder tastes, free jazz saxophonist Adam Nolan is at The Cobblestone the same night, 7:30pm, tickets for both on eventbrite. Some old-school offerings coming up with Dixieland style tunes from Des Hopkins Jazz Band at Arthur’s on Sunday 23rd, tickets eventbrite. Or for big-band fans, the Hot House Big Band are up on Monday the 24th, kicking off at The Tolka House in Glasnevin for 9pm, free event. Legendary saxophonist Michael Buckley’s new album Ebb and Flow launches on Friday 27th at Arthur’s, the first new release on the resurrected Livia Records label, featuring Greg Felton on piano, Barry Donohue bass, and Shane O’Donovan on drums. At the end of the month, it’s even worth risking the M1 traffic up to Belfast where the Brilliant Corners Festival kicks off on February 28th. A stellar line-up from organisers Moving On Music, including Alina Bzhezhinska’s Alice Coltrane tribute, Georgia Cécile, Sultan Stevenson Trio, and Vula Viel’s Bex Burch in duo with Laurel Perdue. The regular sessions are well and truly back after a quieter January. Sundays you’re spoiled for choice with Organ Freeman at The Big Romance, the stalwart Dublin Jazz Jam, Stella Bass at Searson’s, and the Lounge Quartet at Walter’s in Dún Laoghaire amongst others. Mondays, the ‘jam-packed’ Arthur’s Jazz Jam from the folks at Cookin’ Dublin is always worth a look in, or there’s guitar duet Hugh Buckley and Barry McCormack at The Blind Pig. Wednesdays have Pizza Jazz at Lucky’s, Thursdays for the Richie Buckley Quartet back at Frank Ryan’s, and another jam at the Bohemian. Saturday afternoons have the Charlie Moon Quartet at Love Tempo, or later catch Ben Prevo at The Blind Pig. Coming into March, there’s still plenty to look forward to in the jazz world. Pianist Elliot Galvin’s album launch tour hits Dublin on Saturday 1st at The Cooler, together with drummer Seb Rochford, bassist Ruth Goller and former Ligeti Quartet violinist Mandhira de Saram. Zoh Amba’s Bhakti is also stopping in at Arthur’s on the 6th March at Arthur’s, featuring Chris Corsano & Nick Dunston, and legendary American pianist Ethan Iverson gives an intimate solo show at The Cooler on March 14th, tickets improvisedmusic.ie.
