gig Kevin Morby We don’t know who Paisley Promoti
ons are but we doff our cap to them for bringing Kevin Morby to town for his debut performance. It’s refreshing to know there is faint hope for independent promoters amid the overarching heft of the big two. Morby is touring off the back of the release of Oh My God, his fifth studio album, which sees him delving into more spiritual vibes. When asked on Twitter last month if he had a message for anyone who has only just heard his music but is still thinking of coming to see him in London on the occasion of a show, Morby replied with musical emojis. There might be an additional emoji or two to add to this show as it’s the last date on his European tour. Grand Social, Friday July 19, €22.50 gig Mono (Japan) We were down the front at U:Mack’s Plaid show in Whelan’s last month and we’ll be aiming for a similar viewpoint this month for the 20th anniversary world tour of this astounding, Japanese, instrumental act. They are held in the highest of regard for their orchestral arrangements and shoegaze guitar sounds and played Meltdown at the behest of The Cure’s Robert Smith last year. If you wish to Spotify your way around them try 65daysofstatic, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and our own God is an Astronaut. You really need Mono in surround sound though.
