AT THE FUMBALLY The enterprising folk at The Fumbally have joined forces with Wildfarmed to host a panel discussion entitled, “Regenerative Agriculture – What is it and how can I eat it?” Those endeavouring to answer that question on the night include Karen O’Donoghue, founder of The Happy Tummy Co., Chris Fahey of Wildflour Bakery and representatives from Wildfarmed, the pioneering food and farming company currently leading the way in biodiversity, soil and ecosystem health. Cofounded in the UK by George Lamb, Edd Lees and farmer Andy Cato of Groove Armada fame, the organisation’s mission is firmly focused on aiding the transformation of the food system, in an inspiring endeavour that sees everyone in the supply chain rewarded fairly. Its influence is clearly growing, with reputable bakeries such as Russell Street, Scéal, and Wildflour just some of the Irish artisan producers currently using the output of Wildfarmed’s regenerative efforts here. In addition to a discussion on the health and environmental benefits of regenerative agriculture, the evening will feature plenty of opportunities to check out some of their finest products, with a selection of late night bangers set to get everybody shaking that ass. As the hosts so eloquently put it; “It’s not all chewing the fat - we’ll be sampling delicious Wildfarmed products and dancing the night away with our newfound friends till the wee hours, because it turns out sustainability doesn’t need to be a drag.” Tickets to what promises to be a fascinating and informative discussion and party are available online via thefumbally.ie. 7pm – 11pm, Wed October 18th. wildfarmed.co.uk A TASTE OF ARGENTINA - PEPERINA CITY BISTRO As evidenced consistently in these pages, the city has been embracing a diversity of international cuisines over the past few years, and so we were delighted to see Irish Argentinian couple Evan McAuliffe and Diego Cabrera launch a second venue in Portobello. The coowners of popular Ranelagh bistro Peperina Garden Bistro have located their new venture, Peperina City Bistro, in a beautifully bright restored Georgian house on Richmond Street South. McAuliffe tells us that the space includes a Dining Room with original Georgian features, a Garden Room overlooking the outside space, a stylish Rear Terrace for al fresco dining and a Cellar Room for cocktails and private dining. The couple have also charged up the new menu with a strong selection of Argentinian dishes, created in-house on a daily basis, using traditional recipes featuring some fantastic Irish and Argentinian ingredients from suppliers including The Irish Gaucho. In addition to burgers, pastas and salads, diners can look forward to savouring delicious specialities such as Empanadas, Parrillas prepared on a traditional Argentinian charcoal Asado with meats, fish or vegetables, Lomitos (sandwiches) and Milanesas – thinly sliced, tender breaded meat or vegetarian escalopes beloved of Argentinians everywhere. McAuliffe says they are very excited about bringing their new menu to an Irish audience. “These dishes are made in our kitchen daily MID-WINTER FUSION We’ve recently been spicing up our mid-week cooking routine with Fused, a selection of tasty Japanese stir fry sauces made using fresh spices and ingredients by Irish chef Fiona Uyema. The handy little pouches come in a delicious range of flavours including Teriyaki and Katsu Curry, and each pack contains a suggested recipe for delicious DIY dishes that are simple to prepare and ready in minutes. A welcome way to cheer up those mid-winter take-aways, we found them on the shelves of our local Lidl. fusedbyfionauyema.com by Argentinian cooks including my husband Diego and the wonderful Ida, aged 76, who moved to Ireland in recent years to be close to her daughters who had made Ireland their home. Ida has been cooking since childhood at home in Argentina.” Specialising in casual all day dining, the new Portobello bistro offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, and is open from 9am-5pm Mondays and Tuesdays, 9am10pm, Wednesday to Saturday, and 10am-10pm on Sundays. @peperinabistrosdublin peperinabistros.com GURSHA ETHIOPIAN SUPPER CLUB One of our favourite winter rituals involves a pilgrimage to Poolbeg Street to imbibe a creamy pint or two at Mulligans, followed by a spot of supper at the convivial Gursha down the road. The generous dinner at the bustling Ethiopian Supper Club is a great opportunity to try out a fine selection of East African dishes, followed by a delicious homemade Chocolate Fudge Brownie and the prospect of rounding off the evening with a traditional Ethiopian Coffee ceremony. All dishes come served on a gluten free sourdough flatbread called Injera and our favourites from a crowded dinner menu include Doro Wat, a tasty Chicken Stew simmered in Berbere Sauce and Onions, served with with boiled eggs and cottage cheese, and Ater Kik Alicha, a delicious veggie stew made with split peas. Supper Club tickets cost €28.50 per person, and dinner is served from Thursday to Sunday between 5pm and 10pm. Gursha also opens for vegan lunches on Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons, with takeaway available. 7a Poolbeg Street Dublin 2. 39
