IC TOMATO FESTIVAL The last weekend in August sees a very special festival celebrating the colourful diversity of all things tomato. As over sixty different growers get ready to display almost a hundred different varieties of the hardy fruit at Airfield Estate, stiff competition is expected across a number of categories, not least that of “ugliest” tomato, which often produces some fascinating and unusual specimens. There are also a number of tasting demonstrations and workshops to look forward to, including a much-anticipated talk about seed growing and breeding new tomato varieties by Jason Horner of the GAIA foundation, and an interactive taste experience with Dr. Emma Feeney of UCD. Festival founder Nicky Kyle says that this unique community SOME LIKE IT HOT - THANKS PLANTS X CALI CALI As optimistic Dublin weather watchers confidently predict the continuation of summer sunshine and al fresco dining well into September, veggie lovers seeking an alternative to traditional meats at BBQs can now avail of a brace of new plant-based options thanks to the efforts of vegan entrepreneur Aisling Cullen. The Thanks Plants founder has devised a meatless ‘NoMoooo Burger’ packed with black beans, pearl barley, fresh carrots, beetroot and mushrooms, alongside some very tasty Chipotle Sausages aimed at those who enjoy their plant based dishes a little bit hotter. Cullen tells us that the new sausage recipe which features a healthy dollop of Chipotle Salsa sauce, emerged from a collaboration with Tom Gannon and Niall McGrath of Cali Cali, an Irish healthy food brand that specialises in producing a flavoursome food range inspired by its founders’ experience of street food in California. “Non meat eaters are poorly catered for at barbeques so it’s great to be able to offer them tasty, nutritious products that will work brilliantly with the traditional accompaniments”, says Cullen. “The meaty texture is great and as well as being super high in protein it also has virtually no saturated fat.” 10% of profits from all sales of the limited edition BBQ specials go to LGBTQ+ youth organisation Belong To. The war is urgently highlighting that we can and must find alternatives to oil – but there is no alternative to food. We all need to eat!” August 27th and 28th. Pre-book via airfield.ie. @airfieldestate Hen’s Teeth takes on a cartoonish hue over two days this September as their Dublin 8 premises morphs into the Unofficial Krusty Burger Pop-up for the Irish launch of The Unofficial Simpsons Cookbook. Penned by author Laurel Randolph, the creative tome features over seventy recipes inspired by the iconic long-running show, with detailed instructions on how to make the dishes beloved of the series’ characters. Joined by the author, the innovative pop-up will bring a number of these classic cartoon dishes to life, recreating a variety of culinary gems such as Flaming Moes, Krusty Burgers and Super Squishees. Hen’s Teeth will also host a Simpson’s Fan Art edition of Bring Your Own Art Show on Friday, September 9th, with an invitation to artists to bring along a piece of art to be exhibited and sold on the night. The Unofficial Krusty Burger Pop-up opens its doors on September 8th and 9th. Tickets include dinner and a copy of the book, and maybe even that old Homer fav, a tasty donut or two. Mmm donuts… @hensteethstore WESTWARD HO! As yet another Irish summer wends its way to a close, there’s still time to grab a few days away before the Rose of Tralee heralds the end of the sunny season for another year. For those who enjoy their sunsets slightly later, a trip to the West is always worth making, and the recent launch of a new venture by local fourth generation fisherman Damien O’Malley offers further opportunities to enjoy the beautiful vistas of Roundstone Bay in Co. Galway. A trip on his boat ‘Benbaun’ provides a great vantage point to savour some stunning views and catch up with the resident wildlife, while taking in the beaches of Dog’s Bay and Gurteen, the harbour at Ervallagh and the deserted island of Inishlacken. Expeditions range from an hour-long Eco trip, to a ‘Catch and Cook’ tour which enables participants to explore the bay over a three hour period, pulling crab and lobster pots along the way, following which the accommodating skipper will prepare, cook and serve up your seafood bounty for lunch. @roundstonebayandisland 39
