Från kassörskor och butikschefer till (o)demokratiska arbetslag published PhD thesis 2006 Feminism as Paid Work How is work valued? If a mother or father helps a child with their homework it’s not seen to contribute anything to society – but if the same parents pay for a tutor it’s seen as a contributor to growth and is noted in economic statistics. In Sweden, a critical discussion about work has been taking place in recent years, and the authors of this book – who are gender studies, sociology and political science scholars – join that debate by formulating a feminist critique of work. Why is full-time paid work the only social measure of women’s liberation? Isn’t it time to place a higher value on the unpaid work that goes unseen in the statistics? The authors open up a discussion about improving the balance between paid and unpaid work both at an individual level, regardless of gender, and at a social level.
