But as a frame of reference to help us understand the current debate and questions about the future, we need a long historical perspective. The climate scientist and historian Fredrik Charpentier Ljungqvist delivers, in clear, simple prose, a survey of the many climate shifts that have taken place over the past 12,000 years. He shows how changes in the weather and the natural world have been interpreted in different cultures and the consequences of the search for scapegoats. The author brings a scientific perspective on the current increase in global temperatures and reminds us that the models and meteorological data we have access to fail to capture long term changes – which is not to say that we shouldn’t be taking climate change seriously.
