New Swedish Books 74 Siri and Mímir’s Well In the
second book about Siri, the curious and enterprising Viking girl, she discovers a secret manuscript that appears to guide her to the mythical well of Mímir, the source of all knowledge and to which the all-powerful Norse god Odin sacrificed an eye to gain wisdom. It turns into a thrilling adventure full of exciting trials and tribulations, puzzling conundrums and mysterious clues. With their fast-paced story-telling and accessible language Per Demervall and Patric Nyström’s comic books are perfectly suitable for children who are picking up the pace with their reading. Patric Nyström interweaves mythological stories and historical facts about the Viking Age into his story, all of which makes Siri and Mímir’s Well as fun as it's informative. Per Demervall mixes awe-inspiring vistas with turbo-packed action sequences and adds nicely humorous touches to the facial expressions and body language of the characters. He also sneaks in the odd nod to classic European children’s comics – the cowardly Vikings are, for example, obviously related to the Gauls in Asterix. The aim throughout Siri and Mímir’s Well is to foster an appetite for reading and a thirst for knowledge – a message that couldn’t be more on point to a young reader who’s just cracked the code.
