. Off the Page – Greenfeast “For many, this is the end of their year. For me, this is when it starts, when warmth, and bonhomie come to the fore.” So writes chef Nigel Slater in the second instalment of Greenfeast, an optimistic and heart-warming celebration of the dishes of Autumn and Winter. Containing over a hundred plant-based recipes, the seasonal treasure trove is underscored by a flavoursome approach to simple, home cooking. The self-styled ‘cook who writes’ will be in conversation with novelist Marian Keyes as part of ILF Dublin on Wed 13 November at the O’Reilly Theatre, Belvedere College. Tickets: ilfdublin.com Wilde Irish Gin Dry November may be in vogue, but the temptation to embrace it as an antidote to prospective end-of-year excess is being firmly resisted in some quarters. Here at TD Towers, word about a colourful new addition to Ireland’s gin scene brightened the gloom considerably. Inspired by the life of its literary namesake, Wilde Irish Gin sees botanical notes of wild purple mountain heather paired with bitter orange peel. The elixir comes enveloped in a suitably extravagant, purple-hued bottle designed by Stranger & Stranger. Some temptations we can resist, this one not so much. wildeirishgin.com 3. Dublin Food Coop It’s been a busy old year at Dublin Food Coop, where they’ve been settling into a new home at the old Chocolate Factory in Kilmainham, while also developing an innovative community development programme with the Irish Cooperative Society (ICOS). The fascinating new course includes modules on cooperative studies and DIY herbal balms and lotions, while this month’s topic zones in on Zero Waste Cooking with wholefoods chef Rozanne Stevens. Featuring guest lectures from Ollie Moore, Tiziana O’Hara and Tim Cookson, the programme runs until May 2020, with ICOS Skillnets accreditation for those who complete the course. dublinfood.coop/events 4. Rare Vintage Avid followers of the musings of TD’s resident barfly will appreciate that our scribe occasionally rubs shoulders with those who disagree with his carefully considered views. On the plus side though, our correspondent recently got the opportunity to taste a drop of Midleton’s 2019 Very Rare vintage. The new expression made an illustrious debut last month alongside a flight of vintages dating back over three decades. Blended from pot still and grain whiskeys aged between 13 and 34 years old, the impressive distillation is a tribute to the work of former Master Distiller Barry Crockett and his successor Brian Nation. Balm for the soul. 5.
