New Swedish Books 42 Translator’s choice What con
temporary Swedish books deserve to be discovered by the world? Guilherme da Silva Braga has ploughed through masses of Swedish comics and found three favourites he would love to translate into Portuguese. During a translation conference arranged by the Swedish Arts Council in 2018 we, the translators, had the chance to listen to a very interesting talk on Swedish comics, enthusiastically presented by Fabian Göransson. It was there that my curiosity about contemporary Swedish comic books was aroused, and since then I have devoured all the comics I’ve been able to get my hands on. Just over a year and many hundred pages later it is these three comic books that have had the greatest impact on me. Fabian Göranson (b. 1978) The Dream of Europe, 2018, 221 p. Publisher: Ordfront Förlag Rights: am-book, www.am-book.com This is the story of Göranson travelling around Europe, drawn in black, white and blue. On the surface nothing much happens: most of the time the author just walks around with his friend Daniel talking to different people they meet – but underneath it he is constantly thinking about what’s in store for Europe.
