New Swedish Books, Spring 2020 1
Welcome to a new year with New Swedish Books! In
this issue, you can browse through a selection of the most recent Swedish titles. This year, we have asked Jonas Thente – literary critic at Dagens Nyheter – to pick his highlights from among the new literary releases. He also tells us what Swedish literary authors are writing about nowadays. The author and literary critic Hanna Jedvik gives us her top recommendations from the children’s and YA releases due this spring. We also have an article by Kristina Hoas, children’s book expert, who illuminates new trends in the illustration of Swedish children’s and young adult literature. Emi-Simone Zawall, author and critic at Svenska Dagbladet, writes about what she considers the most fascinating new non-fiction. Fabian Göranson, himself a cartoonist, shines a light on some of the most exciting books to be found in the world of cartoons and graphic novels. As ever, we have also interviewed a selection of translators to find out about their favourite Swedish literary gems. In this issue, you will get to meet Guilherme da Silva Braga, Maria Tapaninen and Maria Ludkovskaja. We also feature a report from the British translators’ workshop focusing on diversity in Swedish literature and numbers about our translation grants in 2019. The Egyptian publisher Mohammed El Baaly was one of our Gothenburg Book Fair Fellows in 2019 and he shares his thoughts about publishing in his country. The icing on the cake is a round up of the books that won the August Prizes for best Swedish children’s and young adult book, non-fiction book and fiction book. We hope that New Swedish Books offers you stimulating perspectives on Swedish literature, and that it makes you curious to find out more. You can find information about our translation grants and other international literature grants on our website: swedishliterature.se Happy reading!
