y SUMGOOD – THE KICKSTART KITCHEN BROTHERLY LOVE IN CRUMLIN Just before Christmas three siblings realised a long-held ambition to build a family-style restaurant in the heart of Crumlin. Their new venture is located on the first floor of The Gate Bar, a pub that’s been deeply rooted in the local community for more years than we care to remember. Co-founded by Chris, Brendan and Liam Kelly, the NYC inspired menu at 3 Brothers focuses on ‘Pizza, Wings and Things’, baked in a woodfired pizza oven at the heart of the venture. Chris Kelly says that while the ‘things’ section of the menu features pretty much every diner classic imaginable, including Nachos, Popcorn Chicken and Philly Cheesesteaks, their main focus is on “really great pizza made with the finest fresh ingredients and all homemade dough and sauces.” An extensive cocktail menu is also available, with choices ranging from retro cocktails, to modern, innovative twists on tried and tested classics. With seating for over a hundred, the attractive space features stripped back bare bricked walls, neon signage and industrial style furnishings. There’s also a private dining space which makes for an ideal venue for small local parties and special occasions. Takeout also available. @3brothers.ie Multi-talented Andy Sweeney’s latest undertaking sees him team up with auctioneer George Gerard Mealy to create SumGood, an innovative social enterprise with positivity and innovation at the heart of everything it does. The co-founders first worked together at SCOOP Foundation, and their new venture sees them apply the learning and skills gained from that globally focused endeavour, to fund the development of life changing educational programmes aimed at those often left behind in the Ireland of today. The duo’s efforts currently centre on generating the finance needed for their inaugural project, The KickStart Kitchen. The enterprise offers free professional chef training and networking services to those currently facing barriers to employment in the hospitality sector, while also helping the sector meet some of its recruitment needs. In practice, the initiative involves a collaboration between SumGood and head chefs and restaurants to offer a training course with unique work placements, designed to produce entry level trainee chefs from all walks of life. This training is focused on those living in Direct Provision, people exiting homelessness services and early school leavers, as well as those from disadvantaged backgrounds and immigrants, with tangible benefits for all concerned. Long term, SumGood aim to have their THE GOOD NEIGHBOUR MOVES Rathmines gained a new resident last month as Jess Dollinger packed up her zero waste grocery shop in Dundrum and moved to Dublin 6. As the new arrival continues to settle in, the shelves of The Good Neighbour are being replenished with a treasure trove of products beloved of cooks, bakers and gardeners, all of which come without the unnecessary plastic packaging. Swing by and say hi at 39/40 Castlewood Avenue, Rathmines. @the.good.neighbour 38 own dedicated premises where they can train people each year, help steer them away from the threat of becoming homeless, and ultimately help facilitate a move towards a life changing learning process and new career. The brainchild of Mary Kilduff, the Cook Book Club is a monthly food series that sees the creative producer join forces with Blasta Books, Nine Bean Rows, and Camerino Bakery, for an evening of food and relaxation focused on recipes from a pre-selected cook book. The first ‘Cook Book Club Pick’ is Wok by Chef Kwanghi Chan, who’ll be on hand to share some great insider tips from his debut work to help diners recreate dishes at home with ease. In addition to savouring dishes based on the chosen tome, which doubles as the menu, diners can also look forward to an informative Q & A session with the author. The inaugural event takes place at IMMA on April 29th, and guests also get to take home a copy of the book as a souvenir. BYOB or order from the on-site wine bar. We can’t wait! @cookbookclubevents.com
