The 20th anniversary of the docfest. 12 Holy Mother The holy mother of Swedish hip-hop Silvana Imam explains it all. 18 Gastronaut Sushi, the kind you could commit cold-blooded murder to get your hands on. A couple of years back, she was on the cover of this very magazine. And although printed publications usually keep silent you could certainly hear her scream from the cover picture. Silvana Imam was about to release her second album Naturkraft and our cover headline was the very appropriate translation of the album title – Force of Nature. Now she’s one of the very select few that has been given a repeat cover appearance, this after her return with new album Helig Moder. To some, it might seem slightly odd to profile Swedish-language hip-hop in an English-language magazine, but Silvana has always been pushing boundaries and has to be one of the more interesting artists we currently have in Stockholm. She might be tired of being called a ‘political rapper’, while admitting she’s still a very political person, but more than anything she’s talking about us all being gods and creators of our own destiny. See pages 12 through 14 for a transcript of our meeting and conversation with her. Interesting is also an appropriate word describing the Swedish subculture Raggare. As a Swedish take on the American greasers prominent in the 1950s, it grew to the state where Sweden now has amassed more vintage 1950s American cars than are currently present in the USA. While the US greasers mostly died out in the mid ‘60s the culture has curiously lived on to a belting soundtrack of rock’n roll and rockabilly here in Sweden - predominantly in the smaller towns in the countryside but also regularly on Sveavägen in Stockholm. Director Sebastian Ringler has captured the culture, or a modern neo-version of it, in his film Raggarjävlar. In March the film opens the 20th anniversary edition of acclaimed documentary film festival Tempo. We couldn’t resist highlighting it on these pages.
