BARFLY Dry January at Mary’s Bar Irish Pubs in Ar
t Retreat from the twenty first century this month and every month at Mary’s Bar and Hardware Store on Wicklow Street, where there’s plenty to keep punters entertained all day long, seven days a week. Those doing Dry January can enjoy 0% alcohol on draught with both 0% Guinness and 0% Heineken available, while Heineken 0% is also served by the bottle. Experienced Bark Tenders are only too delighted to welcome dogs, while the occasional cat has sometimes been observed purring lovingly over the fine selection of hardware and tools at the back. There’s also an impressive selection of Board Games which includes Cards Against Humanity, Scrabble, Monopoly, Chess, Uno, and more, with other pastimes also available. Those who like to get their hands dirty can also enjoy a pottery and pints session in the bar this month. Led by ceramics artist and painter Michelle Collier, materials and tools are all included, with an option to get your work fired at an additional cost. This month’s iteration of ‘Plates and Palettes’ sees the pair exploring the topic of Irish pubs through the artwork of the time while celebrating those hospitable institutions as ‘vibrant centres of social interaction, storytelling, and conviviality’. The salubrious soiree also features a specially curated menu inspired by food and drink in historic Irish public houses down through the years. The event takes place in Lavery Room No. 5 in the gallery at 6pm on Thursday January 16th. Tickets priced €84 are available via nationalgallery.ie Fair Drinkums The Ireland Australia Association have served us with advance notice that they’ll be marking their national day with the Aussie Icons Party, a fun-filled celebration of ‘Straya and all things good from the land down under. Expect Russell Crowe mullets and Crowded House dancing to be very much in vogue, while fancy dress ranging from Kangaroo to Kylie to Dame Edna is actively encouraged, but not compulsory. The iconic Aussie shindig kicks off at 6pm on Sat Jan 25th in The Oriel Room upstairs at Foley’s Bar on Merrion Row, and the organisers say that the party will only stop when they’re told to rack off sometime after midnight.
