CSR ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY ENVIRONMENTAL
RESPONSIBILITY The Mimer environmental work covers all operations from construction materials to the residential environment. Our environment philosophy is Think ahead now. It is now, not later, we must act to achieve sustainable development. O point of view, is to reduce energy consumption and increase recycling, but we also want our tenants, thanks to our environmental efforts, to feel that they are making an environmentally good choice when renting property from us. ur most important task in from an environmental ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION In 2012 all new employees went through basic environmental education and training in eco-driving. Both are mandatory for all employees and an important part of efforts to reduce our environmental impact. ENVIRONMENTAL VEHICLES All company cars are ‘green’ vehicles. Most are run on biogas, biogas then forms significantly less emissions when burned compared to petrol and diesel. In addition, we have two electric cars, used by Mimers’ customer centre and and housing representatives. SKÅNE INITIATIVE Mimer is part of the energy challenge Skåne initiative launched by SABO in 2008. The initiative is a co-operation around the target to reduce annual energy consumption by 20% between 2007 and 2016. The national target is to save 20% by 2020, while SABO companies wanted to speed up the measures. A total of one hundred companies are involved with the initiative. During the year, conferences and study visits between the various companies have taken place. ENERGY EFFICIENCY In 2012, work has continued with energy efficiency with the aim to achieve energy savings of at least 2.4% annually. Mimer invested 15 million kronor, excluding redevelopment, to implement energy-saving measures in electricity, heating and ventilation. We continue to streamline our ventilation center, even with redevelopment. By using new technology, we both reduce energy and improve comfort. Measures include the installation of computerized control equipment, replacing older ventilation fans with energy efficient fans and improved recycling. To improve the efficiency of our substations, we have installed equipment for monitoring and control, effective control valves for district heating, energy efficient pumps and adjusted heating systems in our buildings. We have continued to introduce controlled lighting in stairwells, laundry rooms, basement corridors and attics. We have also switched to more efficient lighting fixtures and new light sources in our areas. The measures have saved energy and additionally, also increased security. During 2012, we reduced our electricity consumption by 2.1%. Despite major efforts to reduce heat consumption, the total consumption is at the same level as 2011. It is expected that the measures implemented will provide savings in the long term. ENERGY PURSUIT AND ENERGY CONSERVATION CAMPAIGN In 2012, work on Energy pursuit continued. We started in 2010 in order to raise awareness of how we use energy and where energy ‘thieves’ are. For example, we observed Earth Hour and we are still receiving energy-saving tips on the web. In October, SABO launched a nationwide campaign to save energy. It is a one year campaign and has four focus areas: hot water, lighting, utility and heating. The campaign utilizes video games and a web site with many useful tips. This is in order to encourage a change in behavior among the general public, to deal with environmental and climate problems. Mimer has its own information activities. Among other things, we have built a bathroom in the city square and called on Västerås residents to sing shorter songs in the shower! WIND POWER The board has decided to procure a wind turbine. With our own electricity, we can reduce our exposure to changes in electricity selling price, while supporting Parliament’s objective to increase the share of wind generation. The goal is to cover approximately 40% of our electricity needs with self-generated electricity. The remaining consumption will continue to be traded on the energy market. NEW CONSTRUCTION Mimer’s goal is that all future new housing should meet Västerås City Council’s new definition of low-energy, ie, an energy consumption of up to 60 kWh / m². We also aim to environmentally certify all new buildings to the certification system Green Building, managed by Sweden Green Building Council (SGBC). The purpose of the certified properties is that we want to contribute to sustainable construction and the property sector. Bostads AB Mimer Sustainability Report 2012 9
