n Malmö is beginning to be quite high-profile within the much lauded Scandinavian gastronomy. The city proudly boasts four establishments on White Guide’s top-25 restaurants in Sweden list with two starred restaurant Vollmers being the brightest shining light. We want to present a little guide of what Malmö has to offer when it comes to food and drink so here’s a round up of interesting names to visit in an array of gastronomic categories. Malmö Classics Far i hatten The headline reads Malmö Classics and they don’t come much more classic than Far i hatten, which has served beers at the address since the late 1800s. A classic open-air dance hall of the olden days, in Malmö’s Folkets Park, serving food and drink. A place where the historic heritage effortlessly blends with modern-day gastronomy. The kitchen serves seasonal midsize dishes where the raw produce comes from devoted producers and farmers. A popular detail on the menu is their wood-oven baked pizzas that can be flushed down with either fancy natural wine or with local craft beer or Czech unpasteurized pilsner. By 1969 it had become Malmö’s first English pub under the name The Bull’s Eye which got Swedified into its current name Bullen. Today it’s a prime location for all beer lovers and people who enjoy good quality, traditional Swedish, comfort food. During the warmer months there’s the added bonus of the outdoor terrace. Storgatan 35 bullen.nu Kockeriet Kockeriet has quickly turned into a classic dining destination for the culinary inclined in Malmö since its opening in 2015. Tareq Taylor’s creation pays homage to gastronomy and the handcraft behind it while aiming for the staff to create a great atmosphere together with the visiting dining guests. Tareq’s recipe for success is pride, passion, respect and lofty ambitions with a focus on the craft and the raw produce, plus a love for food. Norra Vallgatan 28 kockeriet.se Fine Dining Restaurang Vollmers A place for food worship and magical experiences. Malmös top restaurant aims to highlight the distinct flavours and special characteristics of the Scandinavian soil. They want to marry local and carefully selected produce with modern cooking techniques and take the Scandinavian cuisine to new heights while presenting the region’s distinct seasons. It’s innovative and perfectly balanced presented in an intimate setting in a pretty townhouse. Tegelgårdsgatan 5 vollmers.nu Aster Not exactly ”fine dining” but the people of Malmö have certainly discovered that Aster offers some real fine cooking. As the first restaurant in the Varvsstaden area, Aster opened earlier this year named after the flower that’s common in this old industrial area. What this new kid on the dock does is to play with fire, everything that’s exciting and in season is thrown over the flames by chef Sahin Erdal. The menu is large but ever-changing. They work with the raw produce they have, with the majority of greens coming from their own garden plot. The turbot cooked over the open fire is always there, otherwise the inspiration comes from Japan, Turkey and Italy. Bloom in the Park Situated among the verdant landscape in Pildammsparken overlooking the water, Michelin-starred Bloom in The Park is as unexpected as its location. Operating, and popularising, the no menu concept where they serve what’s best according to availability, day and mood to ensure unique gastronomic experiences. Pildammsvägen 17 www.bloominthepark.se bloom in the park, Photo Christoffer Lomfors Fast/Street Food Casual Street Food The burger boom finally found its way to Malmö too, but regardless of how many new fancy names enter the scene, Casual Street Food still have a firm grip on Malmö’s burger craving crowds. With a love and passion for making “street food” with good, locally sourced, produce, their version of fast food is far from the big American chains. Spångatan 32 casualstreetfood.se Mastio The winner of the 2015 “Master chef Sweden”, Sandra Mastio, is behind the pizza restaurant Mastio at Limhamn. Here it’s the raw produce that decides the menu, that generally is only three or four pizzas and are called everything from Margherita to My Peciousss. In the restaurant at the Dragör quays there’s room for about 30 guests and like they say: “Don’t ever forget. Pizza is your friend”. The fried chickpea balls come in a number of, often great, versions from numerous restaurants and which place has the best falafel is the great never-ending debate.
