THE IRISH ART OF CALLIGRAPHY THE GREAT DISCOVERY Best-selling children’s author Peter Donnelly has released the long-awaited sequel to The Dead Zoo. Titled The Great Discovery, the book follows Mr Gray, who is in search of “something spectacular” to show off at the grand reopening of his museum. A phone call alerting him to “something old” found in a garden nearby has him excited as the adventure begins. According to Children’s Books Ireland “All the charm of the original story is back in spades…sparkling with Donnelly’s perfect balance of humour and wit…a triumphant return.” Donnelly’s illustrations are wonderful throughout, a perfect blend of colour, humour and enchantment for a kids Christmas pressie. If you’re interested in trying your hand at calligraphy and learning the history of the art in Ireland, look no further than Timothy O’Neill’s stunning book The Irish Art of Calligraphy - A Step By Step Guide. Written by the same author of The Irish Hand, O’Neill is a historian, artist and calligrapher who has long worked to pass on the art of calligraphy to students of all ages. His new book, published in October earlier this year, is both a practical guide to the art and a historical dive into the golden age of Irish art. Opening with a brief introduction to the author, the book moves into a short account of the history of manuscript creation, specifically the story of a young Irish monk who established the library at St Gallen in the 9th century. This gives the reader the opportunity to learn about how manuscripts were constructed, from calligraphy styling through to binding. A paperback edition of the book can be ordered for €18.00 at shop.ria.ie/products/the-irish-art-ofcalligraphy.
