Then Thursday has some serious brass from trombonist Paul Dunlea with his quartet at The Cooler, doors 7:30pm, tickets at improvisedmusic.ie, or if you’re in a dance-y mood you can swing up to the NCH for The Art of Swing with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, 8pm, tickets nch.ie. Then on Friday 3rd at the Unitarian Church, Peruvian guitarist Rodrigo Almonte is kicking off his tour of a new project inspired by Roger Casement’s humanitarian work in the rainforests of Peru. Arthur’s is starting off the month strong with the Tom Ollendorf Trio on Friday 3rd (9pm), and pianist Greg Lloyd’s new single release on Friday 4th (6pm), and following up with some post-bop classics from the Hayley Kavanagh Septet on the 9th (8:30pm), playing the iconic Joe Henderson album A Mode for Joe. All tickets eventbrite. For something a bit different, The Button Factory is hosting Gilsons on Oct 5th and Yeni Türkü on Oct 6th. Doors 7pm, tickets buttonfactory.ie Pianist Carole Nelson is in Dublin on Thursday October 9th with “one of the most arresting piano trios in Ireland” according to All About Jazz. They’re launching their new album ‘Through the Storm’ on Livia Records. Expect lush melodies, fine-tuned trio playing and music inspired by the natural world. Vieux Farka Touré is stopping in at the Sugar Club on Oct 13/14, 7:30pm, tickets sugarclub.ie, and on Oct 16th at The Cooler, there’s a celebration of legendary Derry jazz guitarist Tommy Halferty - still going strong at 80. There’ll be arrangements of some classics of his work, plus a new suite in tribute to Tommy written by Ronan Guilfoyle. Doors 7:30pm, tickets improvisedmusic.ie Some old-school classics at Arthur’s mid-month. A Love Supreme played in full by drummer Eric Ineke and a stellar quartet (Buckley, Guilfoyle, Osio) on Friday 10th (6:30/9:30pm), and the Art Blakey tribute Aren’t Blakey are back on Saturday 11th (9pm). Sunday afternoon Dixieland jams from the Des Hopkins Band on Oct 12th (2:30pm), and Nor’n Irish singer Katharine Timoney drops in with her band on 16th (8:30pm). Sax player Joel Frahm with his trio is back on Sat 18th (9pm) and Sun 19th (4:30pm) for some originals in the classic American jazz tradition. All tickets eventbrite. Music Network’s autumn tour has a bit of Nordic depth going on, with tuba player Daniel Herskedal and his trio in Dublin at The Sugar Club on Oct 21 (7:30pm), and the Pavilion Dún Laoghaire on 23rd (8pm). Tickets musicnetwork.ie If you’re feeling literary, Ronan Guilfoyle’s Bemusement Arcade is playing through their Flann-O’Brien-slashCharlie-Parker-inspired new album (another Livia Records special) at The Cooler on Thurs Oct 23rd, featuring saxophonist Sam Norris along with Chris Guilfoyle at the guitar and Darren Beckett on drums. Doors 7:30pm, tickets improvisedmusic.ie Some rays of Sun Ra at the Sugar Club with the von Trappe, sorry Phil Cohran Family Singers, sorry the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble that is on Sunday 26th (7:30pm), tickets sugarclub.ie. And a meditative moment at NCH from Joshua Abrams’ Natural Information Society and their style of ecstatic minimalism. To close out October, there’s a funky Halloween happening with Signs of Life at the Sugar Club. Featuring Oceanna, a Sun Ra tribute with Steve Welsh, Darragh O’Kelly, Sean Maynard Smith, and Brendan Doherty (plus mystery guest), and the cabaret stylings of Monsieur Pompier’s Travelling Freakshow. 8pm-late/ early, tickets eventbrite.
